  1. That's right. NHOP isn't sophisticated enough to account for head-to-head play and at this point, with three out of seven of the remaining games falling into that category, the skew of the number becomes more extreme. Here's the updated postseason possibility chart. Things are coming into more focus. I have the Mets ahead of the Braves because they currently lead the season series. In the race for the second N.L. Wild Card, the Padres lead the Phillies by 2.5 games and have a Magic Number of 7. Padres need to finish with a better record because the Phillies won the season series. If the Mets win the division, their most likely NLDS opponent would be the winner of a Cardinals-Phillies series. And if they don't, they'll probably host the Padres in the Wild Card series while the Cardinals-Phillies winner would go to L.A. 2. According to this article, they're not considering a change in venue: https://www.mlb.com/braves/news/mlb-discussing-contingency-plans-for-mets-braves-series-in-atlantaMLB discussing contingency plans for Mets-Braves series Options include shifting Friday's game to a matinee and/or scheduling a split doubleheader on Sunday. Though not a desirable option, the teams could also make up one or more games on Thursday, Oct. 6, the day after the regular season is set to conclude, if those games are necessary to decide the NL East title.
  3. Double Unhappiness tonight: Braves win, Mets lose. Magic Number is 8, with 7 games remaining. Mets can still control their fate: If they take two of three from the Braves and three of four of the remaining games against Miami and Washington, they'll win the division. If they only win one game in Atlanta (or wherever the games are played) they'll need some outside help; the Braves will have to lose one or more games against the Marlins and Nationals. 4. Latest from the National Weather Service: Friday: A 40 percent chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 71. Friday Night: A 50 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 58. Saturday: Showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 68. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Saturday Night: A 40 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 58. Sunday: A 40 percent chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 70. Sunday Night: A 20 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 58.
  5. I agree. I think it was someone grasping for a silver lining.
  6. I read somebody (don't remember who) saying that it might be better for the Mets to be a Wild Card. They'll have a weaker opponent in the Wild Card series and then they would only have to beat the Dodgers in a best-of-five instead of a best-of-seven, which might be an easier task.
  7. Only one outcome yesterday, and it was an unhappy one, as the Braves beat the Nationals. When the Mets series against Atlanta begins, they will be somewhere between three games ahead and one game behind the Braves. 8. His name is at or near the top of many of the lists. He didn't ground into any double plays, though. I wonder if he regrets that? Meanwhile, this from Anthony DiComo about Terrance Gore: Should the Mets manage to win it all this year, Gore's unique career would take an historic turn. The pinch-running specialist is already one of the only players in MLB history to earn three World Series rings for three different franchises: the 2015 Royals, the 2020 Dodgers and the 2021 Braves. Making his feat more unique is the fact he didn't actually play in any of those Fall Classics. (Gore was on the World Series roster for Kansas City and Atlanta but didn't appear in a game. He did not make any of the Dodgers' postseason rosters. Only 16 players have been on a winning World Series roster for three different franchises, including Jack Morris, Dave Stewart and Steve Carlton. Gore has a chance to become the 17th. No one has done it for at least four franchises. Teams typically give out World Series rings to anyone who contributed over the course of the season, even if it was for a single game in April. As such, there's no data to determine how many players -- if any -- actually earned a ring with four or more teams. But the list is assuredly small, and Gore is the rare player with a chance to crack it. “It would be special,” said Gore, who signed a Minor League deal in June. “It's definitely what I'm trying to do. When the Mets called, I knew they had a really good ballclub. So I'm putting all my eggs in one basket, and we'll see what happens.” Steve Carlton would have been with the 1967 Cardinals (I assume) and 1980 Phillies. I can't think of what his third team would have been.
  9. The Cardinals would have to win more games than they have remaining in order to do that. They can finish with a better record than the Braves, but not a better record than the Mets. (They can tie the Mets, but the Mets hold the tiebreaker advantage.)
  10. His last three starts: 11 earned runs in 15 innings. One more regular season start, probably against the Braves. If that goes poorly, I wonder how that might impact the postseason plans for him? Does Bassitt move ahead of him in the rotation?
  11. Mets all time Top Twenty leaders in postseason play. This lists combines all levels of postseason: Wild Card, NLDS, NLCS, and World Series. When the Mets are about to begin a new postseason series, I'll post the leaders for whatever Series is about to begin. Needless to say, the leaderboards for the Wild Card series is pretty thin at the moment. If the Mets can fend off the Braves, we won't have to see that pathetic list. And if they don't, at least they'll have a chance to make that list somewhat less pathetic. Active Mets players are listed in bold. BATTING Games 1. 13. NWS forecast not looking too bad, so far: Friday: A 40 percent chance of showers, mainly after 8am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 67. Friday Night: A 40 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 58. Saturday: A 40 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 70. Saturday Night: A 20 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 59. Sunday: A 20 percent chance of showers. Mostly sunny, with a high near 75. Maybe Friday gets postponed with a doubleheader on Sunday. Unless the forecast starts looking a lot worse, I doubt that they'll move the series to another city.
  14. I vote for Philadelphia. Do we think this is something that might actually happen?

  17. What will be the Mets final record for 2022? Where will they be in the standings? Describe their path through the postseason. I'll start: I say that the Mets and the Braves will finish with identical records of 102-60, with the Mets getting the Division title due to the tiebreaker. They'll then defeat the Cardinals in the NLDS in four games, and will lose to the Dodgers in the NLCS in six games.
  18. Corrected, thanks.

  20. Yesterday, the Mets won (Happy Outcome) but the Braves did too. (Unhappy Outcome). The Cardinals-Dodgers game produced both a Happy and Unhappy Outcome. By winning, the Dodgers eliminate the Mets from contention for the top playoff seed, but by losing, Cardinals can no longer get the second seed. If the Mets win the division, they are now guaranteed to be able to skip the Wild Card round. Both teams now drop off our chart, meaning that going forward, it's only about the Braves. On Friday, when the Mets series in Atlanta is about to begin, the Mets will be somewhere between four games ahead of the Braves and one game behind. 22. 2022 marks the 7th time that the Mets have won 97 or more games in a season. (Note: the 97th win in 1999 came in the 163rd game of the season, the tie-breaking playoff game against the Reds for the Wild Card.) Most team wins in a season 1. 108 (1986) 2. 100 (1969, 1988) 4. 98 (1985) 5. 97 (1999, 2006, 2022) 8. 94 (2000) 9. 92 (1987) 10. 91 (1990) 11. 90 (1984, 2015)

  24. Only one Happy Outcome yesterday, a loss by the Cardinals. Three Unhappy Outcomes: Mets lost, Braves and Dodgers won. The Dodgers' Magic Number over the Mets is down to 1. If the Mets win all of their remaining games, and the Dodgers lose all of their games, the two teams will have the same record and the Mets will get the edge because of the tiebreaker. When the Mets arrive in Atlanta on Friday to play the Braves, they will be somewhere between five games ahead and two games behind, with six games remaining. The combination of the Mets losing yesterday and the Braves winning ensures that neither team will have the division title wrapped up beforehand.
