I looked at the standings today for the first time in quite a while. I see that the A's are 12 and 45 with a .211 winning percentage. That projects to a final record of 34 and 128. That would be... pretty bad.

I don't recall who you're talking about, but I'm going to guess it was either Gary Carter or John Franco.

I had forgotten about how newspaper box scores used to arbitrarily abbreviate players' names. Why did they have to drop the E from Buckner, for example? It's only a seven-letter name.

Yes, it was. http://leaptoad.com/mets/jpeg/MetsVsMaris_26June1980.jpg>

Was that the year that the Daily News did "Mets vs Maris"?

I plan to be away from my computer (although not my phone) for an extended Memorial Day weekend getaway, which means that there will be a delay in Schaefer voting for games beginning on May 24. But we'll have the chance to catch up in the middle of next week.

Oh, snap!

And Bill Conlin from Philadelphia. Later exposed as a child molester.

"Broeg on Baseball". Back then, I learned the names of a lot of baseball beat writers from other cities by reading The Sporting News. (God rest its soul.) I still recall Joe Falls from Detroit and Furman Bisher from Atlanta.

For 37 and most, I'll say Darryl Strawberry, 1987, 108.

This is a completely wild guess: For zero (and most), I'll say Bud Harrelson, 1970, 45 rbi.

For the fewest at 41, I'll put Todd Hundley in 1996 and 107 RBI.

Rusty Staub, 1975, 105 RBI and... 19 homers? (Most)

Pete Alonso, 40, most, 131, 2022.

39 most Darryl Strawberry 108 1988.

I suppose it was a rounding error. Thanks!

I'm thinking... 21 homers, John Milner, only 70 RBI, 1972.
