  10. Still working on this one. So far I have seven. I have three green boxes in the top row and three green boxes in the bottom row. And I have the third box in the middle row. I can barely think of any Tampa players at all, much less any who also played for the Cardinals or Tigers. (Although I did think of a .300 hitter.) Maybe something will click for me.
  11. Oops... this is the part that got cut off: Southampton 1 Staten Island 1 Stony Brook 1 Suffern 1 Utica 1 West Islip 1 Yonkers 2
  12. Yes, it's everyone, not just Mets players. If we want Mets players born in New York State, here are the numbers for each "city": localhost/leaptoad_umdb/people/ https://cpanel-just2051.justhost.com/cpsess6320448376/3rdparty/phpMyAdmin/tbl_sql.php?db=leaptoad_umdb&table=peoplehttps://cpanel-just2051.justhost.com/cpsess6320448376/3rdparty/phpMyAdmin/tbl_sql.php?db=leaptoad_umdb&table=people Showing rows 0 - 24 (32 total, Query took 0.0019 seconds.) SELECT birthplace, count(*) FROM `people` WHERE metplayer = 'Y' and birthstate = 'NY' group by birthplace Auburn 1 Binghamton 1 Bronx 4 Brooklyn 16 Buffalo 5 Commack 1 Copiague 1 Farmingdale 1 Flushing 2 Franklin Square 1 Freeport 1 Hempstead 1 Ithaca 1 Jamaica 2 Kingston 1 Long Beach 1 Medford 1 Middletown 2 Mineola 1 New York 15 Port Jefferson 1 Queens 1 Rochester 1 Schenectady 1 Smithtown 1

  14. Chad ochoseis wrote: I had no idea so many Mets came from San Diego... This number doesn't just represent Mets. It also includes minor leaguers (where the birthplace was available) and opposing players.
  15. I've been noticing that, when players get added to the UMDB, I see some birthplaces much more frequently than others. So I did a quick SQL to see the most common birthplaces of the over 9,500 people in the UMDB for whom I have a place of birth. The city that I thought came up a lot more often than others is the one that's in the lead by a wide margin. Perhaps the most surprising item on the list is Cincinnati, coming in ahead of Brooklyn and Miami, among other places. Mets born in Cincinnati are: Don Zimmer, Roger McDowell, Daryl Boston, Lance Johnson, and Joe Smith. Anyone care to try to recall Mets players from any of these other cities? (This isn't going to be a quiz. I'm not going to be monitoring the responses.) 17. I recently did a count, and I've seen regulation major league games in 18 different stadiums, and eight of them are still "active", if that's the correct term. Defunct or inactive: Shea Stadium, Olympic Stadium, Yankee Stadium II, Memorial Stadium, Fulton County Stadium, Riverfront Stadium, Veterans Stadium, Hiram Bithorn Stadium, Comiskey Park, Tiger Stadium. Active: Citi Field, Fenway Park, Camden Yards, Nationals Park, PNC Park, Citizens Bank Park, Safeco Field, Wrigley Field. I've seen minor league games in Brooklyn, Norfolk, Reading, Oneonta, Durham, Knoxville (two different stadiums), and wherever the Carolina Mudcats played. Plus spring training games in St. Lucie and other sites in Florida and Arizona. I once had the goal of seeing games in every major league park, but I lost interest as many of the parks I had already been to started going away, and my desire to see baseball games that didn't involve the Mets dropped to about zero.

  19. Yeah, I think their best bet at this point is to play better than they have been. We keep getting encouraging outings from Scherzer and Verlander, but then the next time around we get discouraging outings from Scherzer and Verlander. Maybe they can trade someone like Canha or Pham for a starting pitcher of equivalent talent. That might help. They're close enough to the expanded postseason that a hot July can put them right in the thick of things.
  20. Hartwig is actually number 1,202. He's the first new Met since Gary Sanchez.

  23. I don't have any answers. I'm very curious, though, about what they're going to do about the starting rotation for 2024. They have to do something, but I don't really know what options they have. I find myself longing for the days when they could bring up someone like Tyler Pill!
