  1. I don't like it either. As a European-American of Italian ancestry, I'm going to start insisting that Joe DiMaggio's number 5 get retired universally. Then the Jews can do the same for Hank Greenberg. And then the children-of-incest can do the same for John Rocker. Where will it end?
  2. I seriously doubt that Nolan Ryan's nose is clean in this whole steroid scandal. He should continue to choose his words carefully.
  3. I don't remember the San Jose thing. I do remember that there was a time when the Giants to Toronto looked like a done deal. That must have been 1976 or earlier, of course, before the Blue Jays were awarded their expansion franchise. (I also remember when the White Sox were headed to Tampa and when the Athletics were headed to Denver. Also Padres to Washington, DC.)
  4. I think it's closer to San Francisco than it is to Oakland, but it's further from San Francisco than Oakland is. So the A's moving to San Jose would get them further away from the Giants, which, you'd think, the Giants would like. But in the end, if they vetoed San Jose and directed the Athletics to Freemont instead, that probably worked out better for the Giants than the first plan.

  6. That business with San Jose never did make sense to me. Would the Athletics also be able to block the Giants from moving to San Jose? I could understand it if the Giants blocked, say the Marlins from moving to San Jose; it would infringe on their territory and create additional competition for them. But the A's are already in the Giants region, so what's the difference? Could the Mets have blocked the Yankees from building a stadium in Nassau County? Could the Yankees have blocked the Mets from building a stadium in Westchester? I guess I can see the logic in that, but if the Mets moved to the Yankees' north, then they'd be conceding the south and the east, so it should all be a wash in the long run.
  7. I don't really want the last year at Shea to be another stop on the steroid sideshow. There are other veterans, I'm sure, who can give us what Green did (including Green) without all the baggage that Sosa carries. Also, from my own selfish perspective, having Sammy and Jorge Sosa both on the team would complicate the Schaefer tallying.
  8. Okay, everyone. Let's pony up and put our money where our mouths are. What's going to happen with Johann Santana? Speak up! Here's my own fearless prediction: The Mets will complete a deal for Johann Santana before the Twins open their spring camp. The deal will include a 72-hour negotiating window, and the Mets will sign him for six guaranteed years, plus two additional option years that will automatically vest based on innings pitched. Going to Minnesota will be the following players: Pelfrey, Mulvey, Martinez, Sosa, and Chavez. The deal will be beneficial to the Mets, at least in the short term, as Santana will win 16 games in 2008. Over the long term, the Twins will be okay too, as some of the young players will prove to be productive big leaguers, while others won't amount to much. Your turn now. GO!
  9. From today's Daily News, David and his girlfriend, "model Molly Beers."
  10. When I saw the subject heading, I was afraid that he had died or something.
  11. I'll be making my first-ever visit to St. Lucie. I'm going to see the Mets play the Indians on March 19. (The only other time I saw the Mets play in spring training was against the Braves in, I think, West Palm Beach in 1986. That season ended pretty well. Hopefully this one will have a similar conclusion.)
  12. The most recent War of the Worlds didn't show New York getting devastated, but a small New Jersey city instead.
  13. When we were in Tokyo my son and I both got a kick out of seeing a clock tower that (we think) Godzilla destroyed.
  14. New York has the more recognizable landmarks than any other city. It's far more dramatic to see the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge, or the Empire State Building destroyed than some unfamiliar skyscraper from Cleveland or Phoenix. If any other cities want in on the destruction action, I think Washington, San Francisco, and London could be strong contenders. (The White House did get destroyed in Independence Day and Magneto destroyed the Golden Gate Bridge in X-Men 3. If Big Ben hasn't been cinematically destroyed yet, it's time will come.)
  15. I'm more likely to buy that argument for 1984 than for 1985. (Not sure why, though. The Mets finished a lot closer in 1985.) I'd like to think that Seaver's 1984 innings and starts would have replaced those of Torrez, and not of Gooden. But we really can't be sure of that.
  16. If he's any good the Mets should throw him onto the pile of players that they'll send to the Twins for Santana. Why leave any talented young players in the system?

Interesting how few of the stones have baseball references. Warren Spahn's stone is practically a biography. Two featured nicknames: "Hammer" and "Salty." And I've seen this before, but it always strikes me as odd when a living person's name is on a tombstone. Mrs. Throneberry shows her birth date, and all that's left to add is the date of her death (and Dixie's body, of course).

  19. I'm thinking of attending a road game against the Orioles in Ft. Lauderdale.
  20. I'm also considering a March trip to Florida. I've heard that flights to Ft. Lauderdale are the cheapest. (And that seems to be true, at least for Philadelphia departures. From New York it may be different.) If we do go, it will be FLL for us.
  21. Farmer Ted wrote: I'm a proponent of the Mets moving the AAA squad to Brooklyn but I know there are obstacles to that. While we're blue-skying, how about this thought: AAA to Binghamton (International League), AA to Brooklyn (Eastern League), and A to somewhere on Long Island (New York-Penn League).
  22. I did! And I knew I was doing it, too!
  23. His briefly arresting the decline is, I think, mostly due to the fact that the 1990 Mets weren't as bad as the teams that followed. The only way he looks better in retrospect is that Jeff Torborg was equally inept, in many of the same ways that Harrelson was. I really thought Dallas Green would solve all that. He seemed to be the kind of guy who was needed to turn it around. He wasn't. There was a long, awful, stretch of managers between Johnson and Valentine.
  24. I too have been advocating the Mets going to Syracuse for a while now. My scenario had the Blue Jays taking Ottawa. But I think Ottawa is no longer in the league. Is the same fate going to befall Richmond? The Gwinnett County location isn't currently in the International League, and I don't think the IL is expanding. If some other team were to claim Richmond, then their former city would be left without a team. (At least, that's how I understand it.) If the Mets were to take Syracuse, (which was their original 1962 Triple-A home, by the way) wouldn't some other team have to go from the IL to the PCL? Otherwise both leagues would have an odd number of teams. Our discussion of the demise of Ottawa
  25. So what is "gene doping" anyway? Something that Fehr said this afternoon made it sound like they test a player's DNA to see if it's been affected by HGH or steroids. Fehr was concerned that a player could test positive if his mother took the banned substance while the player was in utero.
