  1. MIENTKIEWICZ? No, I guess not, but it raises another question... Valid Scrabble word or not, which Met would have the most points in his name?
  2. Mussolini is Il Duce, which doesn't mean 2 but it sounds like it does. He was also Hitler's second fiddle, so give him a 2. We did Bob Denver, how about John Denver?
  3. RING. (I'm surprised by AGEE and JOHNSON.)
  4. 12. (Wasn't that the Channel that WJR broadcast on?) Jack Bauer. (This is an easy one.)
  5. I remember when I was a kid, the smell of cigarettes and cigars evoked thoughts of Shea. That was the overriding aroma there. I guess that's changed; just a few weeks ago I had the same response to the smell of mustard instead. I hate cigarette smoke myself, and even if it's hasn't been "proven" that second-hand, outdoor smoke is a health hazard, it's certainly an annoyance. And I can see a business not wanting one patron to be able to annoy dozens of others. But having said that, I don't think smoking on the ramps, while the game in in progress, is all that objectionable. After the game, when the ramps are jammed with people, would be a different story.
  6. Middle-aged, I'd like to think.
  7. Hogan's a clown. I'm an NYU graduate who did the Washington Square Park thing back in 1985. If it was held in Yankee Stadium, I would have skipped it.
  8. So change it from "Memorial" to "Honorary"
  9. How about D.A.R.R.Y.L.? Is Kenny Lofton still available? Does he have anything left?
  10. I think I read in the News this morning that Ben Johnson is projected to start the season on the minor-league DL.

  12. ="metirish"] Nino I checked on but the others are guesses..... Ah HA!
  13. ="sharpie"]Irish, how did you come up with Nino freakin' Espinosa in 1978 without peeking at sources? I was suspicious when he came up with Pedro Astacio in 2002!
  14. I get extra points for having blue eyes.

  16. Jerry Koosman, 1978?
  17. This thing sat on my TiVo for almost eight months, but I finally watched it this past weekend. I really enjoyed it. It was great seeing some classic action clips, although I've probably seen most of them before: Mickey Owens' passed ball, Sandy Amoros' catch (and DiMaggio kicking the dirt in frustration afterwards) and Thomson's homer. But there was also some stuff that I know I haven't seen before. We've all heard all about Branch Rickey's criteria for what he'd expect from the first black player, but for the first time I was able to hear the words directly from Rickey's mouth as he outlined it for the camera. There was even footage (with audio) of a meeting between Walter O'Malley and Robert Moses and others. We see Moses shifting in his seat and lolling his head. His body language alone tells us there was no way that O'Malley was going to get his Brooklyn stadium. (And that stadium would have been a real eyesore, by the way. The documentary showed a few photos of the different models; it looks like something right out of The Jetsons, or Disney's Tomorrowland. In addition to talking to players, like Snider, Erskine, etc. they also talked to fans, many, if not all, of whom have since become some kind of celebrity. (Pat Cooper, Larry King...) There was one woman, who I wasn't familiar with, but was an author, who was commenting throughout the documentary. But after Bobby Thomson's homer, she says, she was so heartbroken that she never again watched another baseball game. (56 years!) And that was the last we saw of her in the documentary. I was curious to see if she felt any regrets in 1955 at having tuned out after 1951, but no. We didn't see her again. A very entertaining and engrossing two hours.
  18. You know, a Google image search on "ugly backs" yields surprisingly little. I thought I'd find a gross hairy image to paste here, but no luck!
  19. You never know! Even after all these years, I'm still surprised at how many people find their way to the site. I remember back in 1999, Ed Kranepool was the all-time leader in lookups with a total of 16 and I thought, wow, nobody's going to top that!
  20. Yeah, gotta go with the 62ers. How about Hook and Jackson?
  21. Are these 13 distinct pitchers, or are there some repeaters in the list? I don't know why, but something tells me Walt Terrell in 1984 is one of the guys. This guess seems wrong but I'm going to make it anyway.
  22. Cool! Thanks.
  23. I can't download it on this PC, but is UMDB listed?
