  1. I think Charlie Manuel is going to manage a division champion this year.
  2. I'm no journalist, but if I ask an "outsider" what he'd do, and he gives me a nonsense answer, I don't put it in my story. I instead move on to the next outsider.
  3. Yeah, Oliveras is the B-Mets manager. Or they can give New Orleans to Gary Carter if they think it will shut him up.

  6. These guys need a manager now.
  7. Huh! I interpret "interim" to mean until the end of the year. I guess we'll see if the Mets are about to kick off an in-season search. Maybe they'll clarify at the press conference today. Wouldn't it be just like them to be noncommittal, and leave Manuel stringing along just like Willie was?
  8. I'm not at all surprised that they did this in a manner that makes them look bumbling and foolish. The Wilpons seem to share some DNA with Bud Selig. I'm glad we can all get on with our lives now. Peterson will be pitching coaching somewhere else next year. Nieto will get another baseball job too somewhere. There will always be a place for Willie on the Yankees' coaching staff, I'm sure. Will he get another managing gig? Hard to say.
  9. It's funny, sometimes when I look at those old minor league stats, my heart skips a beat and I think, wow, this guy looks like he could be good. And then an instant later I realize that 30 years have passed, the player is around 50, and that I'm not looking at a future star. What led you to dig up Richard Poe's stats?
  10. Bavasi seems a lot less appealing to me than that Cincinnati guy whose name I seem determined not to remember.
  11. How old is he? I imagine he's 21 or 22...
  12. I agree. Hopefully they'll do something really foolish.
  13. Because I liked the number of bench players that were available back when there were ten-man pitching staffs. I'd like to see managers able to make two more moves than they currently can. 26 would still be an improvement, but I think the game would be better if the 25-man roster was expanded.
  14. metirish wrote: A terrible idea I think. I don't think it's a terrible idea, just a neutral one. More people watch on TV than at the ballpark anyway, so it's not like you'll be exposing anyone to something they wouldn't see in their team's road telecast. If I'm the absolute monarch of baseball, I eliminate the DH and expand the roster to 27.
  15. Mike Bishop in 1982? Jerry Cram in 1973?
  16. Vince Coleman Firecracker wrote: So when will Sabathia make his first start in MFing pinstripes? Hopefully on July 28, 2022, one week after his 42nd birthday.
  17. I despised the 2003 version. Maybe I would have liked (or at least, hated it less) it if I didn't care about the comic book character, but I do and Ang Lee's movie was a big swing and a miss. He didn't get the character right at all, and the story had the wrong feel. You can't make a movie like that and not respect the source material.
  18. Every guess so far, right or wrong, has been a catcher. And so was Vance Wilson, who was temporarily a correct answer to this question.
  19. See what I mean about how silly he looks?
  20. Francisco Estrada? (For the record, I haven't looked anything up yet. I just remember him as one of the early one-game guys.)
  21. That would make too much sense. I wouldn't put it past them to fire Willie (or a coach or two) upon arrival at the ballpark. Or maybe, if they decide that they don't want to look as dysfunctional as they probably are, they'll wait until after tonight's game, or before tomorrow's game.
  22. I'd be more likely to put Heiptas in the opposite category: Guys who played defense but never had a plate appearance. (Not sure of that though.) Vance Wilson was in that category during the 1999-2000 offseason, I think. Of course, there are a lot of pitchers who had no PA's, but I don't know if there were any position players. I'll have to look it up...
  23. Quoted the Daily News on speculation that coaches may be fired, and unnamed sources that Jerry Manuel might be the interim replacement. As I said above (but not as explicitly as I should have), there's nothing in the article itself about Peterson being fired today. It's just in the headline.
  24. I gave it 2 stars. I watched it for a while, out of loyalty and affection for the character, but it didn't hold my interest and I bailed on it long before it went off the air. The Hulk looked silly. He didn't talk. He just stood there and growled and threw things. (At least, that's how I remember it.) I know that there are a bunch of people who love the Hulk because of this series, but I already had my own notions about the character and this series didn't live up to them. I was asked to rate it in relation to other action shows, which is why I gave it the two stars. Had I been asked to rate it compared to the comic books, I would have given it one star.
