  1. I suspect that concept is beyond Steve's grasp.
  2. I'm not sure; are you referring to Watchmen?
  3. metsguyinmichigan wrote: Is this the last year at NO, or do we have one more? The Mets originally signed up for two years in New Orleans. I think after this season ends, they'll play another round of musical chairs. I wouldn't be surprised if they end up in New Orleans again, but I'd like to see them land back in the International League. (I'd like to be able to attend some games in Allentown, and I won't bother doing so unless they're playing a Mets farm club.) Also, if they're in the International League even their road games will be closer to New York; they won't have to go to places like Tuscon.
  4. You don't have to be much above .500 to win the World Series. (See the 2006 Cardinals.) In fact, one of these days we'll see a sub-.500 team make the playoffs and perhaps win the whole thing. All the Dodgers need to do is finish ahead of Arizona and have a hot run in October. And Manny can (not necessarily will, but can) help them do that.
  5. I don't think it's anything new. For a long time I've gotten the sense that the best impending prospects were likely to be at AA, and the hangers on age 30 or up were more likely to be in AAA. Some examples (and counter-examples). I looked at a bunch of players who were promoted to the Mets from within, with the intent that they'd play a significant role with the big league club. Gregg Jefferies played almost a full season at Tidewater. (132 games in 1988.) Dwight Gooden: 4 starts for Tidewater in 1983. Darryl Strawberry: 16 games in Tidewater in 1983. Ron Darling: 26 starts for the Tides in 1982, and 27 in 1983. Lenny Dykstra: 58 games for the Tides in 1985. David Wright: 31 games for Norfolk in 2004. Jose Reyes: 42 games for Norfolkk in 2003. Edgardo Alfonzo: Skipped AAA entirely. Lee Mazzilli: Skipped AAA entirely. Randy Myers: 7 starts for Tidewater in 1985, 45 relief appearances in 1986, and another 5 in 1987. Jason Isringhausen: 12 starts for Norfolk in 1995. Paul Wilson: 10 starts for Norfolk in 1995. Bill Pulsipher: 13 starts for Norfolk in 1995. Rey Ordonez: 125 games for Norfolk in 1995. Tim Leary: Skipped over AAA, but spent time there later after his infamous injury.
  6. Only five people have voted for the Mets' Wednesday night loss in Florida. Nevertheless, voting will close some time over the weekend. (And there will be a Schaefer Player of the Month announcement for July.) Voters so far for Wednesday's game are: themetfairy, Benjamin Grimm, Fman99, Frayed Knot, and soupcan. 8. My hunch is that of the five, Neise and Kunz are most likely to contribute to the 2008 Mets. My other, unrelated hunch, is that Martinez is being oversold, although I'm not sure if it's intentional or not. I certainly hope he turns out to be good enough to warrant all the saliva that's been drooled on his behalf, but I have my doubts. Murphy, as related in the Adoption forum, has his sights on stealing the second base job in the next year or so. I wish him luck! I wonder about guys with no defensive position. Sometimes they turn into Jeff Kent, but more often they probably become journeymen like Jeff Keppinger.
  9. Or just let two guys have the same name on their backs, like the Mets do with REYES and REYES. If I remember correctly, in the 1980's Davey Johnson was JOHNSON and HoJo was H. JOHNSON.
  10. He could double their attendance and the Marlins would still have 30,000 empty seats at each game.
  11. I hope they get "Top Talent the alligator."

  14. Less than three hours until the deadline.
  15. Well, hopefully demand will go down, thereby pushing prices down. You have to think, though, that the next time the Mets have a season like 1993, or even 2003, (and it will happen), nobody's going to want to pay those high prices. We may see games where the lower level seats are nearly empty, and the majority of the fans are sitting in the Promenade.
  16. Nymr83 wrote: if the Mets were to trade for Snell i can't imagine it not costing Niese. I don't really have a sense for how true that statement might be. I wouldn't want to trade Niese for Snell; I'd rather promote Niese and see what he can contribute.
  17. Yes. Adding a hitting outfielder would improve their bench depth. (Actually, so would the return of Ryan Church. And even the return of Luis Castillo.) I would like to get a starting pitcher, but I don't think that's on the Mets' shopping list.
  18. Yeah, the teensy-weensy icons for Little and Thomson are switched.
  19. I know one of those 2002 trades was the one that sent Jay Payton to the Rockies. If I remember right, they got back John Thomson and Tom Martin.
  20. 1989: Frank Viola.
  21. Seven hours till deadline. I'm not expecting a move from the Mets.

  23. And the Phillies have just put up a 5 in Washington and now lead 7-3.
  24. He probably is, but that's some weird sentence structure. "Own anything about it?" Also, how many decades ago did Yogi Berra film that barbershop Aflac commerical? That thing has been airing almost as long as the one with the owl and the Tootsie Roll Pop.
  25. I'm glad they never got their hands on Piazza. (Or Seaver for that matter; it looked scary there for a while in 1986.) Another Yankee named Rodriguez. Will he also get to fuck Madonna?
