  1. I think now he's projected to be an Archbishop.
  2. I still have not watched a sporting event, or any non-TiVoed television broadcast, since that last game by Figueroa.
  3. Beveric Benton (Belve) Bean. Played for Cleveland from 1930 to 1935, and with the Senators for 10 games in 1935.
  4. I like that photo. I may end up using it for Stokes' UMDB page. Stokes, by the way, was a five-time winner of the Schaefer Mets Relief Pitcher of the Month award, twice in 2008 and three times in 2009.
  5. Strangely it's the Z that's silent. (Pronounced YASTREMSKI) He probably should have been "YASS" instead of "YAZ"
  6. Well, that $21 million will be offsetting the Gary Matthews money. They won't be able do do anything else with that dough unless they're able to trade Matthews elsewhere without throwing in any money. And if they were to do that, they'd likely be getting a similar huge contract in return.
  7. I just got an e-mail from the Mets, announcing this trade, so I guess it's officially official. The Associated Press is reporting that the Angels are sending the Mets $21 million to pay the remaining $23 million of Matthews' contract. They must have really wanted to get rid of him.
  8. YASTRZEMSKI I actually taught myself the spelling when I was a kid. I think (if the above is correct) I still remember it!
  9. Weren't we recently wondering about if there were any Mets who were more productive during their second stint than their first? Well, it looks like Gary Matthews has a pretty good chance to do that. He appeared in one game as a pinch-hitter (flied to left field) and another as a pinch runner.
  10. Yeah, Gary Matthews Jr. is now almost as old as Gary Matthews Sr.
  11. I'd also prefer that it wasn't Stokes. It's starting to sound like the Angels are getting a minor leaguer. Heyman had reported that the Angels were interested in Stokes, but that doesn't mean they're getting him.
  12. Heyman is hinting that this guy might be headed to Anaheim for Matthews:
  13. I think you just described Marge Schott.
  14. I can't read the original source article, because I'm not a Newsday subscriber, but Mark J. Miller of Yahoo is reporting that Newsday is reporting that Piniero was the guy the Mets really wanted, and they offered him about the same money the Angels did, but now they're pursuing Sheets and Smoltz. (I get the impression that they hope to sign them both, not either/or, but I'm not certain of that.) Their backups are Jon Garland, Erik Bedard, and Chien-Ming Wang.
  15. I think so too. I'm glad that the Mets have owners who are willing to spend money and try to win. I wish they were wiser about it, but I'll take the Wilpons over the de Roulets every day of the week.
  16. You act like that's a bad thing. I mean, I'm fortunate enough that I can go month to month without a budget, but I'm also not independently wealthy. So if a discretionary expense comes along, I don't check to see if it's within the budget, but I do consider whether it's worth the expense. The Mets apparently aren't cash-strapped, but they don't want to spend willy-nilly. I don't think that's so crazy.
  17. Since the Mets seem to have money left in their piggy bank, they might as well go all in on Sheets. Sure, if you guarantee him $9 million or so, you're taking a gamble, but it's for one year (he's surely in no position to demand two or more years) and if it doesn't work out, he'll be coming off the books in time for the next spending season.
  18. Tom Seaver's reaction to a fellow pitcher naming a kid Seaver would probably be very different than his reaction to a fan on the street giving him the same news.
  19. I agree with that.
  20. Yeah, I see Smoltz as a guy "in the mix" rather than as someone who'd be likely to go north from St. Lucie in the starting rotation. The contingencies for Sheets would probably be guys like Niese and Nieve and Stoner, or Perez if one of the above pushes ahead of Oliver during spring training.
  21. Except that I've never even heard of AOL Fanhouse, at least until Ed Price came along. We're mocking him now, but one day he'll probably be President of the United States. Or Emperor of the World, or something like that.
  22. Yeah, but that's only one potential factor. The NL team could have a greater need for a catcher, or more money to spend.
  23. Also, Doug Davis, a name we've been hearing a lot but have been mostly ignoring, signed with the Brewers. (One year, $4.5 million.) So who's left? Garland, Sheets, and Smoltz?
