  1. I always hated that curly M thing, but now it looks kitchy-retro-iconic and I wouldn't mind seeing it again. If Montreal ever returns to the International League, they should revive that logo. (By the way, if they had consulted my six-year-old self back in 1969, I would have told them to name the Montreal franchise the "Royals" and to call the Kansas City team the "Monarchs.")

I remember thinking something similar back when we were waiting for the Nationals to unveil their uniforms for the 2005 season. I think that logo is too funny-looking to use every day, but it would make for a nice alternate.

  4. If Sheets wins 15 or more games with Oakland this year, Omar is going to get roasted. And if he goes 2-5 with a 6.00 ERA, nobody will remember that he might have been a Met.
  5. I wonder why the Yankees made that move to delay Carter's arrival with the Mets. Just to annoy the Mets and Red Sox? If so, that's rather petty. I can see them trying to block Wagner's arrival in Boston since they're a division rival and a possible ALCS rival, but why the claim on Carter?
  6. So we'll end up with John Smoltz. And if he turns out to be unavailable, maybe the Mets will try to lure Bob Feller out of retirement.
  7. I think the point here is that the Mets haven't done anything at all to make their 2010 rotation less questionable. And I think it was a screaming need.
  8. Edgy DC wrote: I don't expect all three to bounce back. I expect one to do significantly better, one to do a little better and one to spend the year frustrated by injury or failure. I think that's reasonable. But I also don't think it will be good enough.
  9. Well, yeah, if everything goes right the Mets will win 110 games. But I think that counting on three disappointing pitchers to all bounce back is overly optimistic. Right now the Mets look like an 80-win team to me, and that's mainly because of Pelfrey, Maine, and Perez.
  10. I used to think that Sid Fernandez (who in many ways was like Oliver Perez) would throw the first Mets no-hitter, and that he'd be the losing pitcher because of walks.
  11. Their current position seems to be that, among Niese and Nieve and Figueroa and whoever else, they should be able to find a decent fifth starter. And that's probably true. But the problem is, Pelfrey, Maine, and Perez are all question marks, and what the Mets really needed this winter was a number 2 starter who would slot behind Santana and ahead of those other guys. And it no longer looks like there's any hope of that happening.
  12. I think it would be hard to find "evidence" of any pitcher having mental issues.
  13. I know it's not new, but it still sucks.
  14. A Boy Named Seo wrote: Danny Knobler steals Ed Price's thunder and reports Ben Sheets to the A's for 1 year, $8 mils. Sheee-it. I think we now have to hope that John Smoltz somehow made himself 15 years* younger over the winter. *Ten would also be good. I'd also be happy with five.
  15. I guess. But there's a greater upside to Sheets.
  16. I hope it doesn't end up being Smoltz. My issue with him isn't his time in Atlanta, but his age. I'd much rather have Sheets.
  17. I understand that MLB has sold its soul to the networks, but switching a Sunday game to the evening is very family unfriendly.
  18. I think reporters look forward to pitchers and catchers because they get to escape the cold and go to Florida. I don't know why fans would look forward to it, unless they're taking their lead from the reporters, which is certainly possible.
  19. Mostly HBO and Turner Classic Movies. Sometimes American Movie Classics or Fox Movie Channel. I think it's been at least ten years since I've rented a movie. (We rented Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Indian and the Cupboard when my son was a toddler.)
  20. The only thing that can make this a bad trade is if they end up desperately needing Stokes. While I suppose that's possible, it's pretty likely that they'll uncover someone sufficiently Stokes-like.
