I know there's little enthusiasm for Mike Moustakas here, and I can definitely see why that might be.

But that doesn't mean that it might not happen. Or that he won't at least be the subject of a lot of hot stove chatter. So here's the thread for that.

Plusses: 3rd base, former #2 overall draft pick (2007), Power, just turned 29, reasonably good fielder as far as I can remember (although I could be wrong there), and is the nephew
of one time NYM hitting coach Tom Robson.

Negatives: Doesn't walk much so his middling career BA (.251) becomes a less than middling OBA (.305) which equals a whole lotta out making, and his power in 2017 was far beyond
anything he'd shown before: 38 HRs in 555 ABs this season vs 81 combined in his previous 2,500 ABs/six seasons (approx 18 per every 555 ABs)

Has played seven seasons (or parts thereof) and really only had 2 good years.

Not that interested. Plus, big power numbers in a juiced ball year.

My vibe is he'd come here overpaid for too many years and then suck for
the most part and get hurt or try to play through injuries and suck more.

But: Royals just extended his contract so never mind.

OE: he can still leave, but hope he stays put (at least not come here)

If the signing team contributes to revenue sharing but didn’t exceed the luxury tax threshold in the previous season, the team gives up its second-highest draft pick and $500K of international bonus pool money in the next int’l signing period (which opens on July 2).

edit: That 500, along with any other moneys given up this way, are distributed evenly among teams that didn't give up any.

The agreement from the last CBA was ratified almost a year ago but, as far as FA compensation goes, this is the first winter in which the changes will be put into effect.

http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/new-cba-changes-draft/ (Dec 2016)

Draft Pick Compensation

The system of draft pick compensation will change drastically. Under the previous agreement, teams signing players who had rejected qualifying offers from their previous team would forfeit their
highest unprotected pick.
Now, a team signing a QO free agent will be subject to the following rules:

• A non-market disqualified Revenue Sharing Payee team (i.e. a team that receives revenue sharing money) will forfeit its third highest remaining selection.
• A Competitive Balance Tax paying team (i.e. a team whose payroll exceeds the luxury tax threshold) will forfeit its second-highest and fifth-highest remaining picks—in addition to having its
international signing bonus pool reduced by $1 million in the next full signing period.
All other teams will forfeit their second-highest remaining pick and will have their international bonus pool reduced by $500,000.

Teams that lose free agents who rejected qualifying offers are subject to the following rules:

• A non-market disqualified Revenue Sharing Payee team will receive a pick immediately following the first round if the player signs a contract with a total guarantee of $50 million or more.
• A Competitive Balance Tax paying team will receive a pick immediately following the fourth round.
• All other teams will receive a pick immediately after the Competitive Balance Round B.

HARD pass. I believe I've outlined why in a few of our other Moussaka threads.

HARD PASS

I'm picturing Sylvester Stallone. A county sheriff. Pennsylvania. Intercepting a convoy of about 50 bikers shipping drugs from Phillie into Harrisburg. He was supposed to meet up with 10 units from the state police, but they never showed, because they're ON THE TAKE!

Sly has to stop the convoy with just three deputies at his disposal, along with a tractor trailer, and 10 sticks of dynamite. It's a fool's errand, but he's making his stand at HARD PASS for his daughter, a promising young lawyer in Harrisburg, who OD'd on this gang's drugs.

Actually, there aren't any other Moustakas threads. Discussion of him has been scattered all over the place. That's why I created this thread.

Sandy pretty much rules out the Mets signing Moustakas.

Sandy Alderson narrows Mets’ free-agency options

Not especially surprising.

So, we'll be pacing the floor, waiting to see which 39th and or 40th players on other teams' rosters will become available when those teams sign free agents.
Oh goody!
