Edgy MD Site Manager Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 Almost December and the Yankees still don't have a manager. What's up with that? One thing I would conclude is that they weren't expecting to fire Girardi at all, and letting him go was likely as much about salary demands as lack of satisfaction with his performance.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 I read today that they'll be interviewing Carlos Beltran for the Yankees job.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2017 Author Posted December 2, 2017 (edited) And so Aaron Boone will be named the next manager of the Yanquis despite having no previous managerial or coaching experience. He was, you will recall, a Yanqui player for two months back in 2003, replacing Robin Ventura who was dealt at the same time to the Dodgers. He then famously injured his knee in an off-season basketball game prompting the Yanx to go out and get Alex Rodriguez. Details of his new contract as they become available. Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 2, 2017 Posted December 2, 2017 Well, his father has enough managing and coaching experience, so maybe the Yanks are hoping it's in his blood. Plus, he's a descendent of Daniel Boone, so killing bears is also in his blood.By the way, Bret's son got drafted this past summer, so that's now four generations of Boonies.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2017 Author Posted December 5, 2017 So of the six new hires this winter, only Gardenhire to the Tigers was NOT a first time manager.Callaway, Boone, Cora, Martinez, and Kapler will be rookie skippers, and will do so in the not-so-small markets of New York, New York, Boston, Washington, and Philly

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted April 19, 2018 Author Posted April 19, 2018 A 3-14 record and a league worst -46 run differential earned Reds manager Bryan Price the honor of the year's first firing.Jm Riggleman, whose last managing job had him telling the Nationals he wanted a longer term contract or he'd walk ... he walked, is the new interim skipper. Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted April 19, 2018 Posted April 19, 2018 This has nothing to do with Bryan Price or Jim Riggleman, but I'm a little surprised that Willie Randolph's managerial career seems to have ended almost ten years ago. I'm not saying that he clearly deserves another shot, but I did think he'd at least be in the conversation more than he has. Maybe I'm not the only one who has a lasting image of how he managed like he was afraid to lose during the last weeks of the 2007 season.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted April 19, 2018 Author Posted April 19, 2018 Willie's one and only job came right on the verge of the sabermetric era (not its existence but its more universal adoption by ML teams) which is something he seemed ill prepared for and is probably seen as too old to change. Younger and smarter is the current wave while older guys who want to run the game the same way they played it (1st inning bunting) and think the right attitude will get them through(I've been a winner all my life) probably aren't on the rolodexes (see what I did there?) of GMs and club Prez's
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted April 19, 2018 Posted April 19, 2018 Yeah, I can see that. I guess his time to get another job was more around 2010 or 2011 and that just never happened for him.

Sort of like the anti-Mets, can't develop a pitcher to save their souls, but plenty of hitters.Their GM was supposed to be a genius but he traded us Bruce for Dilson Hererra
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted April 19, 2018 Posted April 19, 2018 The amazing thing about the Reds is that one of the three contracts making up the bulk of their payroll is going year after year to Homer Bailey, who is giving them replacement-level pitching at $20 million per season. They can't develop a pitcher, but they can sure pay one.

dgwphotography Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2018 Posted August 5, 2018 The new GM decided. Little Lord Fauntleroy is the GM, just not officially named.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 7, 2018 Posted September 7, 2018 Getting a head start on 2019, but it reports say John Gibbons will be done with the Blue Jays after this season, following 11 years over two tenures as Toronto manager. Gibb sports a career 783-777 record, so he'll have to fight to keep that mark above water as the Jays play out a string that includes three games each against the Sox, Yankees, and Astros.
