Bob Melvin is truly #RootedInOakland. The Bay Area native inks a one-year contract extension through the 2019 season.

Mackanin will serve as special assistant in 2018, hopefully assisting in another disastrous season.

The ups and downs of Dusty Baker's managerial career: 22 seasons from 1993 - 2017 interrupted only by him being jobless in 2007 and again in 2014-2015
Nine times his teams reached the post-season ... but that's where the trouble started.

SFG: 1993-2002
1997 - 1st place NLW, 90-72; Lose in 1st round to Marlins 3-0
2000 - 1st place NLW, 97-65; Lose in 1st round to Mets 3-1
2002 - 2nd place WC, 98-63;
* Win 3-2 over the 101-win Braves;
* Win 4-1 in 2nd round over 97-win Cards
;
* Lose 4-3 in WS to Anaheim after having a 3 games to 2 lead including a 5-0 lead in the 7th inning of Game 6 (giving Russ Ortiz the game ball)

CUBS 2003-2006
2003 - 1st place NLC, 88-74;
* =#008000]Win 3-2 over 101-win Braves (his final post-season deciding game win!!);
* Lose 4-3 to WC Marlins after holding a 3-2 game lead and a 3-0 lead in the 8th inning of Game 6 (Two words: Bart Man) and again they held a lead in Game 7

REDS 2008-2013
2010 - 1st place NLC 91-71; Lose in 3-Game sweep to 97-win Phillies in 1st round (including a Roy Halladay no-hitter)
2012 - 1st place NLC 97-65; Lose 3-2 in 1st round to Giants after leading the series 2-0
2013 - WC 90-72; Lost one-game WC play-in game to Pirates

NATIONALS 2016-2017
2016 - 1st place NLE 95-67; Lose 3-2 to Dodgers in 1st round after holding a 2-1 lead
2017 - 1st place NLE 97-65; Lose 3-2 to Cubs in 1st round despite a lead in the final game and Scherzer on the mound

So that's nine straight losses in games where his team had a chance to put away a post-season series and 11 of 12 dating back to the final two games of the 2002 World Series
It can't all be his fault of course, but it's hard to divorce him from it all also.

The Nats say it was a "baseball decision" to not rehire him although that contradicts previous rumors. And while they deny it was over contract specifics, it needs to be remembered that Dusty wan't
their first choice when they were looking around for a replacement for Matt Williams. They had targeted Bud Black (now with Colorado) but that fell apart over ... contract specifics and so they
moved on to Baker.
GM Mike Rizzo (or the folks he reports to) apparently have ideas of what a manager is worth and they don't want to go over that. As a long-time vet going for his second deal with this team, maybe
Dusty wanted a raise they weren't willing to give. Also his star RF'er notably went all non-committal when asked about Baker in the aftermath of their elimination ("that's not my decision").

btw, none of the Washington coaches are being kept either -- although it's possible they could re-hire some of them once they decide on a new skipper.
So this makes highly respected and long time pitching coach Mike Maddux at least theoretically available. Know any teams looking for a replacement PC?

Can Cora officially accept a deal and continue coaching the Astros? I’m wondering if the Astros season will have to be over before he can announce an agreement with any team.

"Gutless arrogance", says Bob Nightengale in USA Today
A "laughingstock", says Thom Loverro in The Washington Times

No, they aren't talking about the Mets, for once, they are talking about the Nationals!

Folks in Detroit pretty happy about the Gardenhire hiring.

Best wishes to him.

I imagine if the Mets went hard after him, he'd have considered it. It's a tough assignment, trying to perform your second act in the same division where you had your long-term first job.

I would have been very Gardy leery.

I can't remember specifics now, but I recall questioning a bunch of his moves during the annual ritual sacrifice to pinstripes the Twins would pull each year.
Also, the Twins have a not so great track record getting nothing out of players who go on to be good or even great elsewhere. I mean, sure, everyone does that, but they seem to do it because they try
to mold their guys into old-school type opposite field singles hitters. They did that with Papi Ortiz for crissakes before flat-out releasing him at age 26 coming off a 826 OPS season. They wanted Carlos
Gomez to slap the ball on the ground too during the one year they had him and he wound up blossoming right after those restraints came off. Recently they gave up on 1st round draft pick Aaron Hicks
(traded for a .140-hitting backup catcher) who by the end of the year was the starting CF for the Yanquis.

And, again, all orgs miss players here and there. It's just that Minnesota seems to do so specifically by trying to put round pegs in square holes and then blaming the pegs when it doesn't work.
Now maybe that's more organizational than it is on Garderhire specifically, but he was an organization man for a long time, something they talked about as being consistent throughout the whole Tom
Kelly/Garderhire time frames, so I wonder how set in his ways he is, especially as he talked in his Detroit press conference about needing to be introduced to the analytics department.

Two teams take advantage of the playoff lull to hire first-time managers, one expected, the other a bit of a surprise.
And I guess the Boston hire makes the answer to Willet's question in this thread [10/21, 1:41 PM] -- 'Yes'

Do ya' think that some of the guys who jumped to sign would have waited if they had known the MFY spot was going to be open?
Maybe all of them?

If they didn't know it would be open they didn't do their homework. Few thought
that he would be back for another term.

It will be interesting to see who replaces him. As much as I loathe them more than
utility companies and lima beans, it is one of the most prestigious jobs in all of sports.

The Yanquis tend to stay in house for a lot of their stuff. When they needed to replace Torre they interviewed only Girardi (former player who was part of their broadcast booth at the time), along
with Mattingly, and Tony Pena who was an active coach for them at the time.
Most of the names I've heard thrown around today involve guys in their system -- coach Rob Thomson, various minor league mgrs -- along with former (actually still current coach technically) NYM
batting coach Kevin Long who of course came from the Yanx.

After hiring Matt Williams because he reportedly didn't want a recycled manager, Nationals GM turned to veteran Dusty Baker only to back out of that after just two years even though they produced
94 & 97 win seasons. Well now that team has turned back to another first-time in Dave Martinez. They had reportedly also interviewed hitting coach Kevin Long and recently canned Red Sox
skipper John Farrell
Born in NYC, raised in Florida, Martinez was a long-time player [16 seasons from '86 - '01 with the Cubs, Expos, Reds, Giants, ChiSox, Rays, Cubs again, Rangers, Blue Jays, and Braves] and since has
been the bench coach with Joe Maddon on both the Rays & Cubs and a frequent managerial interviewer.

Maybe the Nats’ desire not to pay for a good manager is a factor in the team’s inability to get through the playoffs.

Even the big salary that Girardi was getting is what we just paid Astruble Cabrera.

His post game ritual will be to go home and tell his wife a joke.
I guess for road games he'll have to call her, but will he wake her up after west coast games?

Kapler is the answer to a cool trivia question: Who was the last Major League player to appear in a game without a uniform number?

For the final game at Tiger Stadium in 1999, players went out to their positions wearing the number of the best Tiger at that position. Kapler played center field. He represented Ty Cobb, who never wore a number.

There was a column* in one of the papers campaigning for exactly that, and I'm thinking to myself; Please make it happen!.

* IIRC it wasn't one of the regular sports guys but rather more a social commentary column about the lack of minority managers and, yes, it got in the "been a winner all his life" line in.
