Tug McGraw is all, "I'm happy, too, Kid. Now how about you and your buddy get your fucking hands off of Willie Mays."

Whoever he is. Holy hell, touching Willie Mays.

It wasn't me. I was running around the infield.
Great thread.

Grabbing Willie Mays is like grabbing a moonbeam or an enchanted creature. The moment you do, you're paralyzed by the scandal of it all.

Is that Eddie with the Perfesser?

I love those jackets. I don't know why the classic Mets uniforms don't get more love. They're right up there with the Cards, Dodgers and Red Sox among the best in the game.

Somebody had to look after Eddie when his father started courting Nanny.

I hope that's not from a shaving cream ad cuz Joe was the owner of a perpetual five-o'clock shadow. I think it reappeared ten minutes after he shaved.

A nice story about this Neil Leifer photograph from Sports Illustrated here: two Mets fans, their friendship and, of course, the ever camera-ready Casey Stengel.

Though the Failing Ultimate Mets Database and the Fake News Mets by the Numbers don't include him, Olympic gold medalist and Nazi humiliator Jesse Owens was ... briefly a coach for the Mets!

Yeah, it was as a spring training instructor, but still! Here is as as newly signed player coach Yogi Berra and GM George Weiss celebrate his first day by attempting to cripple him.

I remember your original 2008 piece about that photograph very well and in fact, immediately thought of it as soon as I saw the photo in your post above, even before I read any of your post.

I'll share (or re-share) some of my colorizations here, sans the MFC logo or my sig. I don't recall ever sharing this one, especially full sized. Ashburn doing what he did alot.
I'd love to make money through my color work but then I couldn't share it in this manner. Once the image is out there, especially a big bare version like this that would print up excellently, it's worthless. It's flown the coup.

Bye bye Richie.

Another take, different angle --- Jesse smiling, and in the background, Howard Cosell smoking a cigarette, and Johnny Murphy

Jeez, this is so good, it's even better than a real color photograph. How the hell do you do that?

Looks like two different efforts, unless he had a quick smile.
Did they keep on raising the bat every time?

Determination and an eye for detail.
I see now, at this size, there's some real light blue in Ashburn's uni that should have been removed. That's only supposed to cover the pinstripes. Oh yea, and you need to be real anal, lol.

Different takes. Compare Yogi's grips.

Pinstripes, I think, are the baddest bitches in baseball colorizations. I'm working on a Brooklyn Dodgers project and it's a blessing that their unis have no pinstripes.

Could you post the b&w of that Ashburn? TIA.

I've got to have the B&W version somewhere. I'll look.
