Guest d'Kong76 Guests Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 NY Mets at San DiegoWhen: 9:10 PM ET, Thursday, July 27, 2017Where: Petco Park, San Diego, CaliforniaBy GracenoteThe rebuilding San Diego Padres are hoping to reach the postseason by 2020, and they might be ahead of schedule. The Padres’ young nucleus is trending in the right direction heading into Thursday’s finale of a four-game series against the New York Mets, who are looking to win their first series in San Diego since 2011.After opening the series with back-to-back losses, San Diego improved to 28-26 over their last 54 games with a 6-3 victory Wednesday as Manuel Margot blasted a two-run homer and fellow rookie Luis Torrens tripled in three runs. “We’ve got a long way to go,” manager Andy Green told reporters. “But what we have is guys that want to improve, who want to be around each other and enjoy coming to the ballpark every day. When you have that, you’re going to be better than people expect.” Like the Padres, New York has several players who could be on the move before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, including closer Addison Reed and right fielder Jay Bruce. Reed has converted 12 straight save opportunities for the Mets, who have won six of their last eight contests but sit 13 games back of first place Washington in the NL East. TV: 9:10 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), FSN San DiegoPITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Chris Flexen (MLB debut) vs. Padres RH Luis Pomodoro (4-5, 4.71 ERA)Flexen will be called up from Double-A Binghamton to start in place of Zack Wheeler, who landed on the disabled list last week with a stress reaction in his right arm. The 23-year-old Flexen is 6-1 with a 1.76 ERA and 63-to-10 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 61 1/3 innings between High A and Double A this season. “He’s pitching very well,” manager Terry Collins told reporters. “He’s had some very, very good starts in Binghamton. And we’re anxious to see him, very anxious.”Pomodoro hit his third triple of the season but received a no-decision against San Francisco on Saturday after allowing four runs (one earned) over six frames. The 24-year-old native of the Dominican Republic has won four of his last seven starts after failing to record a victory in his first 10 starts this season. Perdomo is making his first appearance against the Mets but owns a 4-1 record and 3.76 ERA in six career starts against NL East opponents.WALK-OFFS:1. New York 2B Neil Walker (hamstring) is expected to be activated from the disabled list this weekend in Seattle. 2. San Diego INF Yangervis Solarte, who has been out since June 21 with a left oblique strain, could begin a minor league rehab assignment later this week.3. Mets RHP Robert Gsellman (hamstring) is set to begin a minor league rehab assignment Thursday with Double-A Binghamton.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 I was going to go with 'SAN DIEGO SERENANDE' for our final game in California for the year NgwZW8-JhIs ... but Matz's shit outing and SDP gloves combined to ruin the mini-streak I was on (perhaps my first ever in CPF/IGT history)John Sickels profiles Chris Flexen2017 has been impressive: 1.76 ERA in 61 innings between High-A and Double-A with a 63/10 K/BB and only 40 hits allowed.Listed at 6-3, 250, Flexen was born July 1st, 1994. He features a heavy fastball in the low-90s and mixes the sinker with a cutter, curveball, and change-up. His command was erratic in 2016 but he’s made big strides with that this year, keeping his mechanics in gear more consistently and dramatically lowering his walk rate, from 3.42 BB/9 to 1.47 BB/9. That’s made a huge difference.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 Every year someone seems to get like an 8 game IGT streak. Don't believe I have seen that yet this season.
Guest d'Kong76 Guests Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 I'm surprised we don't keep a tally. We keep track of everything else. But yeah, seems like 3-4 seems to be the ceiling in 2017.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 There was a five-game winning streak in April, and we were thinking, "Okay! Here we go!" But things turned bad very quickly after that. Ten losses in eleven games.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 Yup, and that graph shows that every one of our upswings since then has been matched by a downturn of just about equal (if not greater) proportion.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 Luis Perdomo is the pitcher - I think Pomodoro is a restaurant or something.Anyway, he was a combination starter and relievers as a rookie last season. Strictly starter this year: 17 starts, 4-5; 4.71; 1.5424 y/o (I think everyone on this team is under 25 right now) out of the DR, BR/TR. Never faced the Mets before which helps explain why I had never heard of the guy prior to today.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 Pomodoro is the Italian word for "tomato".
Guest d'Kong76 Guests Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 I occasionally tinker with the game notes thing, etc. to see if anyoneis paying attention.

Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2017 Posted July 28, 2017 Ugh. Flexen wearing the dreaded Akeel Morris #64. Let's hope he fares better.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2017 Posted July 28, 2017 Lots of 2-strike counts for Flexen so far, but he hasn't been able to put anyone away yet.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2017 Posted July 28, 2017 TOP GUN was war turned into a music video. You didn't miss much Ronnie. What that SNY piece didn't mention was that SOME LIKE IT HOT was filmed at the Hotel Coronado. Now THAT's a movie worth seeing.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 28, 2017 Posted July 28, 2017 I like that hypnotism is banned in San Diego schools. STOP THE MESMERISM!
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2017 Posted July 28, 2017 We're getting our butts kicked these last two days by a 30 y/o rookie and a bunch of 21 y/o Rule 5 guys.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2017 Posted July 28, 2017 Hey let's see if we can hit some infield choppers!
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 28, 2017 Posted July 28, 2017 I have no clue how they think they can win with a roster of 14 pitchers and 11 batters. Ten and a half, sorta.
