Yeah, I'm kind of in favor going interim at this point, and letting Dick Scott or Dave Racianello or somebody drive the car around for a month.

They could just trade him to a contender for a single-A assistant hitting coach or something.

Either that or claim that he's injured and collect the insurance money.

I thought it was kind of accepted that Sandy and Terry didn't always get along, and that Sandy wanted someone new in there after Terry's contract expired.

The challenge in finding a manager, of course, is getting someone better than who you have. I don't know if there is a candidate-in-waiting.

I don't mind Terry. He's proven he can win, and he seems to keep the clubhouse in order. I wouldn't mind seeing him back.

I think Terry's done after this year, but they won't fire him before the end of the season. It's a lost cause at this point, so canning him won't change anything. May as well just ride him to the end.

Well, there's something to be said for lifting the pall and beginning the transition today.

He's obviously a great company man. There's something to be said for that sort resigning and turning over the reigns to somebody who could use a profile boost and a little experience. Obviously, Art Howe and Jerry Manuel lingered on in the last weeks of their tenures when everybody knew they were doomed, maintaining what dignity the could, and thems weren't happy endings. Omar Minaya too.

yeah, but you generally get more time to conduct an exhaustive search for a excellent guy in the offseason. Unless they want to give a guy a month just for that guy's sake (not for the job here, but elsewhere)

But even if you did want to like, give Viola the pitching coach job, I think the adage about not trusting April/Sept stats is valid for coaches too.

Yeah, I'm talking about an interim appointment. And yeah again, I'm certainly not advocating that a strong performance by the team should lead to the organization rewarding the interim manager or staff with the job, a la Jerry Manuel.

It's that worry that makes me hesitant though! Do you trust the Mets to not just take the interim? (And don't you risk losing the interim guy if you don't then give him the job?)

Do I trust the Mets to not hire the interim after giving too much credence to a September record? As much as I trust Mets to not make any other mistake in their hiring process if they wait until November, I guess.

Lets wait til the end of the season and assess the team first.

I wouldn't want an interim manager when I really don't know if our GM is returning.

Well, the Mets likely know if their GM is returning.

If he's not, I don't see how an interim manager is affected by a GM change. His contract and tenure end with the season.

I think there is a difference between leaving after your contract expires, and being told to depart before your contract ends.

One is more dignified. Terry deserves a dignified departure.

Best case scenario is him announcing sometime next month that he plans to retire when his contract is done, and he goes out with a special day with an ovation and a loud thank you.

Next best is everyone knowing that he is leaving when the contract expires, and still getting an ovation and a thank you on the last day.

I see only criticism for telling him to go home a month early. That's a lose-lose in my view.

I think Terry has earned the right to serve out his contract and the Mets will give that to him. Where they need to work together is in the optics of a change. All I've seen reported would suggest Terry's not even sure if he wants to return as manager. I also don't think he and Sandy are enemies. I think the writers, who generally love Terry and generally resent Sandy, might make it seem that way.

The thing is though he's old and served with honor and its time to move on.

(edit, what 41 said)

Yeah, I certainly don't mean he should be told to leave. I only thought he might prefer to leave rather than be left dangling after it's leaking all over the place that he's done.

That happened with Howe, and he was going to leave and the Mets had to talk him into serving out the last week or two.

Ah. Now I see. I tried to blot the Howe era from my memory. Never happened!

I don't always agree with Terry's in game decisions, but overall he has done a pretty good job for the Mets. He's been a stand up, organization man for the Mets. He deserves to exit in the most dignified manner possible. It is time to move on, but Terry has earned the right to to quit/retire on his terms (rather being fired).

Resting a 21 year old player in the second game of a twin bill (yeah, so it was a night game after a day game. But still ... ) after he had hit a game winning home run in the first game?
Another one of his head scratching decisions.
Its time.

Really? Terry should be fired for resting Amed Rosario in the second game of a doubleheader?

Of course not. I said "example".
It was just an example of one more of those decisions that Doc, and others, have mentioned. We have discussed the relief pitching "formula" he uses, replacing a pitcher who may have only thrown 5-10 pitches in the previous inning.
Why should a 21 year old need rest? He seems to have a similar formula in the back of his mind that tells him players need to be rested, even if they are on a hot streak.
Rests are for older players or those who are slumping.

I missed where you said "example," but everybody needs rest. Sometimes young people more than most.

D'oh!
You're right.
I originally wrote the sentence to include the word example and referred to Doc's post. Then changed the sentence before I hit enter.

From that story:

In case there is any doubt about Collins’ standing, the team last month removed the manager’s image from the rendition of “Piano Man” that plays on the video screen in the eighth inning at Citi Field. Previously, the Billy Joel lyric “And the manager gives me a smile” showed a cutout of Collins’ head.

Is this really a thing? Why wouldn't they wait until after the season to edit him out? Or is this just a case of people reading tea leaves and seeing what they want to see?

The figurative public beheading of Terry Collins first reported here.

In 2007, when the Mets were doing the "Sweet Caroline" singalong (when it still had residual goodwill from the 2006 postseason), there was a clip in the accompanying video of hitting coach Rick Down pointing upward. After the All-Star break, following his dismissal, Down's segment in the production was disappeared.
