Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted March 26, 2017 Posted March 26, 2017 NYDN: Steven Matz has been scratched from his scheduled Monday start with "tenderness" and "irritation" in his surgically repaired left elbow. The piece goes on to add that doctors insist this is NOT an issue with his UCL but that they'd "know more in the next two or three days"http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/mets-lefty-steven-matz-scratched-start-elbow-irritation-article-1.3009637

Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 Dave Lennon of Newsday sez club is "fed up" with Matz. Me too.

Guest 86-Dreamer Guests Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 http://www.newsday.com/sports/columnists/david-lennon/sandy-alderson-on-steven-matz-s-latest-injury-it-s-worrisome-1.13320088"The Mets weren’t happy that Matz alerted them to this elbow thing as he tried to push through it Wednesday against the Marlins, who roughed him up for five runs and eight hits in four innings, giving him a 4.26 ERA in four starts. But with the growing pressure on Matz because of his checkered medical history, it’s a Catch-22. If he tells the Mets he’s hurting, he gets ripped as injury-prone or soft. If he says nothing, pitches anyway and gets bombed, he’s the bad guy for not speaking up."poorly worded, but sounds like they are frustrated that he waited until yesterday to inform them
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 I think Lennon is interpreting the tone of this Alderson Magic Quote:“It’s worrisome that he continues to be injured off and on. That’s the difficulty. We don’t think it’s serious. On the other hand, we have to be able to, with starting pitchers, to rely on them every five days. We’re not sure exactly where this is going to take us.”
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted March 27, 2017 Author Posted March 27, 2017 With Harvey, deGrom, Syndergaard in front of him, and Lugo, Gsellman and Wheeler on his heels, there's simply no upside to Matz faking anything at this point. You can only pull that sort of thing offif you know the job will be held for you when you're ready to return. But that ain't the case here, even with the novelty of being the only lefty in the crew.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted March 27, 2017 Author Posted March 27, 2017 Matz claims his elbow "felt good" after throwing today -- 55 long-tosses off flat ground.Next test will be to get back on a mound but no word yet on when that will be.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 "felt good" in Mets land means .....sorry, trying to be witty but what's the point . I wish Matz a healthy season , I like him a liot , plus Lorcan has his jersey ...but honestly it would not surprise to hear next he's done for the season
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted March 29, 2017 Posted March 29, 2017 I'd like the stability of Bartolo Colon back. Other than Thor I really dont know what the other pitchers have in the tank.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 29, 2017 Posted March 29, 2017 Not for nothing, but Colon has a 9.20 ERA this spring.Maybe he'll sort it out and work his way through another unflappable season, but nothing lasts forever.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2017 Author Posted March 30, 2017 Matz had MRI on Wednesday. Almost certainly will NOT be on the OD roster.

Don't bet against Bartolo.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2017 Author Posted April 3, 2017 "Strained Flexor Tendon" is the diagnosis. The plan is rest for several weeks before attempting to resume throwing in late April; that would presumably lead to minor league rehab games. There's no timetable for all of this yet, but the middle of May is sounding optimistic at this point.http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/mets-steven-matz-diagnosed-strained-flexor-tendon-article-1.3017589
