The thing is, the record was Ty Cobb's when Lou Brock broke it, so they must've found some Slidin' Billy Hamilton data that wasn't part of the official record and subsequently added it. The guy died in 1940 as the record-holder and didn't even know it.

Also, lots of baseball folks used to routinely ignore pre-1901 stats which had the effect of erasing all but the final year of Sliding Billy's career.
So while he might have had an idea that he had out-thefted Cobb for their careers, the problem was getting someone to listen or care.
