Skipping deGrom

I'm having trouble with this decision. It's courageous. It can even be called strategic — I mean when was the last time you think Miami looked at a Rafael Montero scouting report? But how do you justify replacing an all-star quality pitcher with a guy from AA whose career has been tumbling down hill for two years? The word most folks would use is crazy.

I'm squarely in the "whatever" camp. I don't know enough facts to say whether it makes sense or not but I would suspect that they wouldn't be "skipping a turn" unless they felt they really had to.

I think skipping deGrom makes sense. I just wish they had a better alternative than Montero but maybe he'll surprise everyone. In another thread I predicted (tongue-in-cheek) that he'd throw a one-hit shutout. I guess I was thinking of Aaron Heilman in 2005...

They cited mechanical issues and potential fatigue as reasons, as well as pointing the second wind he's had following short rests in the past.
And, after 13 runs and 25 hits over 2 starts/9 innings, it's not like you can just turn your head and say 'eh, it's just [crossout:clzq37em]one[/crossout:clzq37em] two of those things'.

How strange that control was this guy's ticket to the big leagues, lack of control was his ticket back to the boonies, and he comes back up, walks six in five innings, but still keeps the other team off the board. I'm going to mark that one down as "not repeatable," but I'll sure take it.

yeah, the extra rest and days might actually have messed him up more than anything else, barring an actual pending physical injury.

It'd be nice of the defense could occasionally bail him out of course, but at this point a healthy Cabrera's better, but otherwise it's probably a tossup between deGrom and d'Arnaud on who's the best defender ( per his position) on the field.

But he did pitch better. It would be hard not to, but he did, certainly. The walks were partially a result of some squeezing.

A little offense in the first seven innings yesterday would have gone a long way. He'd have left with a lead, and gotten the front half of the bullpen working for him instead of the back half and the same performance would have been framed as a meaningful step forward.

I hope that's kinda what it is -- that he has mechanical problems, rather than being fatigued and needing some rest. Because history sez that pitchers that are kinda run down in September don't recover that same season, even with extra rest.

like Jacob deGrom, who struggled last September...
..and then pitched some great postseason games.

Granted, a lot of that September struggle was luck whereas this August he's been a little more wild. It's just not always easy to see what's fatigue and what's just a little out of whack.

Why isn't he up with the big club? Five scoreless innings in his last major league start wasn't good enough to fill in if DeGrom (or Matz) can't go?

The Mets great young rotation seems to be wearing out pretty fast. I would prefer they protect the young arms for the future, rather than risk further injuring them. When pitchers pitch with pain, discomfort, or mental doubts regarding their arm health, they are often prone to altering their motion and mechanics to avoid the discomfort, which can lead to ineffectiveness or further injury.

DeGrom can go. Matz has already been replaced in the rotation. DeGrom doesn't need to be.
