Given his recent work load and the streak ending just last night I would have avoided using Familia today. I think this is the first time this season I've gone on record slapping Collins upside the head for a bad decision. Reed or Robles could have taken the 9th today. I feel confident with both of them. I guess TC don't.

Terry's moves:

- as I said at the time, although I didn't want to PH for deGrom, it was the right move. It was a major situation run scoring opportunity (2nd & 3rd/none out) and, for all the talk about what a good hitter JdG is, he has 3 hits this entire season and has K'd just under 1/3 of the time.

- using Cespedes there was the right move too. Yeah you pretty much knew he was going to get walked but that's OK too since it uses him without taxing him. Then I also liked that it was a pitcher PR'ing for him so as to not waste a player on a day with a short bench. The alternative there is saving him for some other PH situation that might never come up - and what are the odds that there was going to be a better one than that: 2nd & 3rd/no outs and already the bottom of the 8th??

- I was less OK with PH'ing Johnson for Lagares but mostly for the defense it might (though didn't) cost us later than the move itself. But I understand the thinking; with the team hitting as poorly as it has lately leaving Juan in there vs RHPs (where he's hitting .224) is not going for even the smallest edge you can find. And I'm certainly not buying the logic that because the black cloud is so thick right now that it's all going to fail anyway so let's all just throw our hands up and not bother trying.

- I would have gone to Robles to start the 8th with the idea of going to Reed in the 9th. And not just because Familia blew the save the night before (in a way I was almost glad the streak is over) but for the several games he had pitched in a row and for the thing that's kind of gone unnoticed this season with all the emphasis on his streak ... that Reed's been the better pitcher all year: lower ERA (by a full run), lower WHiP (by almost 50%!!), fewer batters faced in the same amount of innings. What's saved JF has been that he generates more ground balls (9 GiDPs) and that he keeps it in the park (0 HRs). He probably needed the break and I don't feel like you're losing much (if anything) replacing Reed/Familia with Robles/Reed
That said, Jeurys was actually was more unlucky today than bad after so many games lately of it being the other way around. Broken bats hits, seeing-eye hits, bunts that didn't roll foul, etc. The walk killed him but it's not like that's a rarity with him. Not blameless, but also not terrible.

- Once Reed was in I would have been tempted to let him finish the inning on just about anyone except maybe Carlos Gonzalez when one swing ties the game.
But CG hits 50 points less vs LHPs and was 0-3 w/2 Ks vs Blevins ... and now he's 0-4 w/3 Ks

oe: and lest we forget where the real problem lies: we scored one run today and 15 over the last 6 games, that's not a formula for winning under any strategy.

Excellent breakdown. I didn't know that about Reed, even though watching as many games as I do, I should have. That's fascinating.
