There won't be a save situation tonight. This is the time to use him.

Lesson learned - NEVER bring in Familia in non-save situations!

And how many of those base runners were walked?

True. I thought of that after a while. That's what happens when a cold beer is your bench coach.

Of course, now I wish I had been managing with the way Familia handled this inning.

The problem, quite obviously, was the walks.
No one hit the ball hard that entire inning but he missed with something like seven straight pitches that weren't even close to the zone.

And he looked like he was trying to throw darts instead of a baseball. Aiming, kinda not following thru, tho I've seen him do that before when pitching okay.

Bring in Thor. NOW!

Damn. That would have been an interesting bit of business.

Save situation, shave situation. Familia has been off of late, even before runs started coming of it.

The next Mets game begins in 14 hours. I'm sure that the White Sox have been resting for hours.

Gut punch.

Yes, the whole preferential-option-for-the-designated closer business is ruining America.

And that's it.

A weekend with what was essentially a non-appearance for Syndergaard plus two horrid outings for Familia. Tough to win with that formula.

Oh well, at least we have Harvey going tomorrow.

It's not that bad. More like someone coming down hard on your foot. Or a REAL bad stubbed toe. We will recover quicker than you think.

Ha, no, this isn't a prediction. It's a FACT!

Yep. You bring these guys in in any other scenario and they make a face like you just gave them calculus problems to solve.

Well, my problem isn't the save situation so much as the "we've got to keep running him out there" mentality. He's pitching poorly, so give somebody else the first shot at the highest-leverage inning. No biggie. Familia'll be back out there in a game or two, if not later in the evening.

But we get so caught up in the politics of it, the manager's decision is down to replace him as the #1 guy or keep him as the #1 guy. So if he's pitching poorly, but not so poorly or so long-term that you're ready to knock him off his perch for the foreseeable future and possibly forever, you've got to keep running him out there when the game is on the line, rather than saying, "You know, this other guy has been throwing really well so I'm going to give him first dibs tonight, and we'll do what we can to get Jeurys locked back in."

It's only takes a little bit of nuance, but it's the sort of decision making that wins you games. But managers don't allow themselves that authority any longer. Terry certainly doesn't.
