Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 There have been 23 (out of 54) Mets seasons in which the Mets went the entire season without having had a Hall of Famer play in at least one game.Mike Piazza's induction this summer will only reduce that number by two, even though he played in eight seasons with the Mets. Here's the list. I noticed that each of the Mets post-season teams (except of course for 2015) has had at least one Hall-of-Famer. Will the 2015 team maintain the trend? It may not. I don't think any of the team's veterans are likely to go in, and it's way too early to project any of the younger players. Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 Let's not sleep on David Wright now. http://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/jaws_3B.shtmlProvided he's not just done, I figure one more HoF caliber season would put him at heavily favored, but even just being healthy enough to be 'good' for the next 5 years of this contract could get him there.Perhaps Beltran can cover 4 more years there too.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2016 Author Posted January 7, 2016 I think David does have a chance, but my hunch is that he won't make it. He'll probably fall well short of 3,000 hits and 400 homers. But he'll probably get some good-guy votes, and he does have a lot of All-Star appearances. And hopefully a few more trips to the World Series...

Guest sharpie Guests Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 Pedro Martinez gives us 2008 (on edit: too slow). Also, Gary Sheffield and Billy Wagner are still hanging around on the ballot so a surge for them is possible. Either one gives us 2009.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 David Wright currently falls at 22nd all time on the JAWS list for third basemen. http://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/jaws_3B.shtmlHe's going to need to start producing some outstanding years soon in order to really move up that list. Simply remaining a good player (say, averaging 3.0 WAR a season) for the next 5 years isn't going to do it.
Guest sharpie Guests Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 A surge for Jeff Kent would bring us 94, 95 and 96.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 I love David, but he's 33 and hasn't played a full season since 2012. He'd have to go on a TEAR the next few seasons to get any real consideration. He'll get votes, but nowhere near enough. Our best shot off this recent run is one of the pitchers, probably.

Simply remaining a good player (say, averaging 3.0 WAR a season) for the next 5 years isn't going to do it.Like a said, one more HoF season seems a necessity. Say he had a 6 WAR season this year, he'd move up to 18th. 10-11 WAR over the next 4 seasons, which isn't much, would get him right around that AVG line. Factor in his character and hopefully some postseason success and a ring?I mean, maybe he's done. Maybe this spinal thing will just destroy him. 140 PA isn't much, but that's what he played after the injury and he was good. Not good enough, perhaps, but if he's on the field I have faith in him being good.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 If David Wright plays 3 more years at the level he's played so far he'll still probably fall a bit short i think. and hes hurtand in the post-steroid era declines are likely to come sooner. The best case scenario for his career at this point is probably to end up roughly equal to Scott Rolen (with slightly better offense and worse defense)Beltran is probably the Mets best shot at adding more years to the list, unless any of the current pitchers enjoy HOF careers,No Chance: 1964, 1979 - 1982, Best Shots:1984 - a whole lot of close misses here: maybe the veterans committee someday helps out Strawberry or Keith Hernandez gets in as a broadcaster? 1990- Strawberry? David Cone?1991 - Cone?2009 - Beltran? Sheffield? Wright?2010 - Beltran? Wright?2011 - Beltran? Wright?2012 - Wright?2013 - Wright?2014 - Wright?2015 - Wright?

Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 I think Scott Rolen is a Hall of Famer too, fwiw.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted January 8, 2016 Author Posted January 8, 2016 And then there's Johan Santana, who's definitely a coulda-been but seems likely to fall short.He at least does well in "Black Ink" according to Baseball Reference:Baseball Reference wrote:Black Ink Pitching - 42 (37), Average HOFer ≈ 40Gray Ink Pitching - 122 (157), Average HOFer ≈ 185Hall of Fame Monitor Pitching - 82 (139), Likely HOFer ≈ 100Hall of Fame Standards Pitching - 35 (99), Average HOFer ≈ 50JAWS Starting Pitcher (81st), 51.4 career WAR/44.8 7yr-peak WAR/48.1 JAWSAverage HOF P (out of 62) = 73.9 career WAR/50.3 7yr-peak WAR/62.1 JAWS

It's sad how few 3Bs there are in there.
Guest sharpie Guests Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 I think Jeff Kent with his "most home runs by a second baseman" stat along with an MVP stands a much better chance than David Wright.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 At present. There's always magic pills! Also, I think Beltran has a VERY good shot at this, considering that he likely has a couple more compiling years ahead, and especially considering that the next few rounds of voter pruning/new voter addition will likely produce a muy El-friendly electorate.
Theoldmole Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 I really hate Jeff Kent and do not want to see him in the Hall.

He's a long shot based on the BBR numbers, but he'll definitely get support. And if he made it, he'd probably go in as a Met, too.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 Only 1964 Met I see who got any support at all was Roy McMillan:1972: 2.3% 1973: 1.3% 1974: 1.1%I guess the rule about needing 5% to stay on the ballot wasn't in place yet.
