Mets acquire him from Oakland for a PITA. Alex Torres DFAed.

30 y.o. Loogy having a bad year but a good track record.

Remember his from his Braves days when Atlanta always seemed to have at least a half-dozen LHRs in their bullpen.
Can't say I'll miss ATorres too much. Wasn't a bad idea and was kind of necessary after Edgin went down suddenly, but just too many walks to stomach.
This is maybe an acknowledgement too that Blevins still isn't all that close.

Did anyone notice I wrote PITA when I meant PTBNL?

I just assumed we had traded Torres away for an animal rights advocate - and I was OK with that.

Hope he's bringing the Tzatziki sauce.

Whatever. Another pitcher yay. These fringe moves, like backup catcher, are the things first place teams fret over.

lex Torres was weird in that his bottom line (a 3.15 ERA in 34 innings) wasn't as disastrous as the process by which he got there. He'd walk two guys and not be near the plate, and then fan the next guy on a slider at his shins. I would imagine any inherited runner numbers weren't so good, but checking those, he allowed 5 of 25 (20% to score), which strikes me as not so bad.

I guess the summary is that he was serviceable, but looked like he could blow at any minute. I imagine he could clear waivers and be back in September.

As far as Blevins, maybe this trade indicates he's far off, but as likely indicates that they don't know what he'll have upon his return. Anyhow, this is an option until then an option (lefty specialist) the team hasn't really had in a long time. Not since they sent down Chipotle Rocket at the end of June, anyhow.

The CPF has had our Lefty Specialist all year. He didn't even spend any time on the DL.

Speaking of Leathersich, lost in much of the deadline hoopla surrounding last week deadline madness was that he underwent TJ surgery - so not only is he no longer a factor in this season's planning but he's pretty much out of the picture for next year too.

Lefties don't like him. (.199/.266/.263). Hell, even in a crap year, he's doing the dew against lefties: .182/.286/.209 this season. So, yeah, between Clippard and him, we're nicely Harperized for the stretch run.

Hey now. Well, there was that 4th of July party that had me out of commission for a few days.

And we'll all go with this vivid memory.

All fine and good except that:
1) O'Flaherty was only out there because the succession of Alex Torres, Blevins, Leathersich, and Edgin (and probably someone else I'm forgetting) have fallen by the wayside for one reason or another.
2) Every pen needs at least one lefty so we're a bit short these days with him right now with Gilmartin in charge of eating up multiple and less LHB-specific innings.

Maybe Dario Alvarez is the answer -- or at least A BETTER answer (or maybe not) but my guess is that both will be out in the pen starting in about five days and maybe old friend Alex Torres will be with him.
IOW, let's not act like there's some sure thing coming in via a white horse to replace him.

I don't agree that every pen needs a lefty, every pen would ideally contain pitchers capable of getting out good left-handed hitters, but a terrible pitcher shouldnt be on the roster just because he is a lefty. The Mets would be a better team with Gilmartin pitching to the big lefties, Dillon Gee as the long man, and O'Flaherty sitting in the stands not the bullpen.

I agree that there is no sure fire LOOGY waiting in the minors, but it is difficult to fathom someone doing any worse than O'Flaherty has since his acquisition. At this point, his confidence must be completely shot which is only going to compound things going forward. Maybe Orosco has a few innings left in his arm.

Sure it's difficult to fathom. At the same time, it's kind of difficult to fathom that he'll be throwing to the tune of an 8.00 ERA forever. So I'm not planning on throwing him into the Pit of Despair with a handful of games before the roster expands.

I would prefer he just jumped in himself. Which he did tonight.

No need to throw him, he appears to have fallen into the Pit of Despair of his own accord.

You should be flattered.

He fell into the pit because his arm isn't good enough to throw anything, much less himself, anywhere.
