A series or two before the break, the Mets were seeing if they could jostle Philly at the bottom of the runs-scored rankings. Well, they're not jostling anymore. Tough break, Chicago. Where's Ron Kittle when you need him? We're knocking on Seattle's door, too.

They are tied with Philly for second to last in the majors with a .660 OPS.

I wonder if any team in baseball has ever made the playoffs with a bottom 3 offense. Not bottom third, bottom 3.

Well, the Mets did in 1973. Second to last in all of baseball.

I had thought of that. Doing some quick, back-of-the-envelope math says the Mets look slightly more handsome (less repulsive) on a runs-per-27-outs basis.

Honestly, I'm looking at my back-of-the-envelope math and concerned I got it wrong. I may re-cacluate this evening.

3.53 is the R/27 I got for the Mets.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/NYM/2015-batting.shtml

2667 outs. / 27 = 98.77777777777777777

349 runs / 98.777777777777 = 3.53

You might be underestimating but chances are the rankings roughly the same.

Why, the Mets did, of course. .653 OPS in 1973 was only better than San Diego.

OE...missed Dino Jesus' virtually identical post. I need a better smartphone.

I'm happy just to get to average. Dead last (and it wasn't that close) at the end of July.

Hats off to the Mets.

Heard on SNY this morning that since (not sure which date in) July, the Mets are first in batting, hits and home runs and second in runs scored in the majors.
Nice.

Not only have they risen from dead last to seventh in the league in a short amount of time, but they're only .02 out of fourth place. That's some good batsmithing, boys.

And it's not like these numbers don't count those 10 punchless weeks.
