It's not the stats strictly from the bench but the combined output, whether as starter or off the bench, from all those who came into the year as backup players or were brought up to replace injuries,
specifically: RECKER, TEJADA, PLAWECKI, MAYBERRY, NIEUWENHUIS, HERRERA, MONELL, CECILIANI, AND MUNO

Reserves are limping along at .133 / .243 /.217 // .460. About what you'd expect from a benchful of Kris Bensons. And that's only their performance in games they haven't started. Add in what they haven't brought as fill-in starters and injury substitutes, and it's easy to see Met reservists as the main difference between first and second place this year.

The Mets bench is like the 2014 Mets pitcher hitting situation. It's almost like, in this one facet of the game, somebody forgot to tell the team that the season had started. Worth noting is that .460 OPS is augmented by among the most inconsequential of pinch-hit homers last week � Ruben Tejada turning an 8�1 defect to 8�2 with a solo shot in the eighth.

I'm OK with a launching our Castellanos Missle at the end of this series.

And the frustrating part is that it didn't look like this going in.
They started off with a crew plus some backups who had some combination of either finishing up strong last season (Nieuwenhuis), or had really good springs (Nieuy again, plus Muno, Mondell, Castellanos), or had a track record of ML success in specific role situations (Mayberry vs LHP, Nieuwy vs RHP) and yet ALL of them have thus far failed miserably and then the ones brought in to replace the initial washouts are now washing out.

It's probably sample size meaninglessness, but Nieuwenhuis wasn't very good off the bench last year either, most of his value came in his spot starts.

I miss Lenny Harris. They played a between-innings video many years ago where they asked the question, "Who's the funniest guy on the team?" It had a dozen or so players, all saying "Lenny Harris," followed by Lenny giggling and saying "me."

I heard something just recently that he was coaching but had also gotten into some games. Might have been in east Asia somewhere, or maybe Senegal, I dunno.
But it's worth a shot ... he won't turn 57 until later this year!

The current line on the 'Irregulars' [Campbell, Plawecki, Mayberry, Tejada, Recker, Herrera, Nieuwenhuis, Monell, Muno, and Ceciliani] stands at a combined .195/.262/.300
although even that sorry line is somewhat inflated up by the recent surge from Tejada. Take him out and we're getting a robust .182/.247/.282 with a 30% K-rate

With the pitiful offensive contributions from the Mets reserves, it is a miracle they are even in the pennant race. The fact that the Mets aren't buried near the bottom of the standings is a testament to how good their pitching has been.
