MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 I don't remember that view when coming down the hill (in the background of the picture) from Broadway. I think that was the view from across the river from near MFY Stadium.Later

The stuff isn't for the 20-month-old son, it's for the Dad. And if he's grading each team about what they send for a blog, then his letters to the teams aren't honest and accurate. This amounts to "Send me free stuff under the guise that it is for my toddler or I'll shame you on the Internet."And, well, cranky old man turf here, but if he's setting up a lifetime of fandom for the kid based on which team sent him free stuff, that's pretty weak.I collected pocket schedules back in the '80s, and -- this was before email -- and each spring I'd send a postcard to each team asking for a couple pocket schedules and mail-order souvenir info. Some teams would, in fact, send stickers and other things and that was pretty cool. The Royals, Orioles, Cubs, White Sox always sent along extra stuff. The Twins would send player postcards. This guy is a goofball, but it would not kill the Mets to toss some stickers and a Mr. Met postcard in an envelope.

Blue level is FREE and contains 4 FREE ticket vouchers. Membership card. Lanyard. Get some more stuff if you actually come to Sunday games."
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 I realize the "fan pack" guy is inevitably a Rorschach test (or Les Rohr-shach test) and that we will read it into his experiences whatever we choose to fit our usual stances (Mets suck as always, the dad was trying to do something nice for his kid; Mets can do no wrong ever, the dad is a phony and a creep), but how about some love for those Cleveland Indians employees who passed a birthday card around the office for everybody to sign? Trying to picture Madge from accounting fretting that Ted from shipping already wrote "Dear Mason, Happy Birthday and Go Tribe!" because, darn it, that's what she was going to write.Makes a fella wanna look past Chief Wahoo.
Guest Mets Guy in Michigan Guests Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 That was pretty cool of the Indians.I was always happy when I got a little extra, and it wouldn't have killed the Mets to throw in some stickers or something.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 This was a neighborhood "thing" when I was about eight or nine years old. We used to call it "sending away to teams". Our "fan pack" letter (at least mine) consisted of an insincere and manipulative two or three paragraph letter -- essentially a form letter I developed over the course of this practice -- feigning passionate fanhood towards the team that was my target. I would proclaim my fanatical devotion to the team in question, identify my supposed favorite players and even include an anecdote or two that were supposed to be my most cherished team memories. The letter would then not so subtly morph into a request for free anything -- pictures, programs, yearbooks, stickers, schedules. Whatever. I would've asked for used equipment if I thought there was a chance in hell that the teams would honor that one.The most generous team, without a doubt, was the Houston Astros They'd send me player pictures, team pictures, yearbooks, everything I asked for. The Mets weren't so bad themselves. They'd send glossy b/w pictures. Some of the pictures had real autographs. I have a Rusty Staub with an ink autogrpaph. I know the autograph is real because the ink pen made an indentation all the way through to the reverse side of the pic. The stingiest teams would merely send me a schedule, or sometimes, not even that -- just a price list of available goods.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 I'm aware of Mets in recent years sending nice packages of stuff on the house and off the record, so I actually found their response a little surprising. I'm guessing whoever fielded the request (quite possibly at the intern level) asked somebody who was like "we don't do that, I think," and it went down from there.A picture of Mr. Met in the mail, and done.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 I did the "send away" thing too, probably in the summer between 4th and 5th grade. I still have all the stuff they sent me in a binder somewhere. The Mets sent a b/w paper team picture. The Twins sent stickers if I recall, and the Geoff Zahn autographed portrait I asked for. Got a lot of schedules and green and red book offers. The coolest thing above all was the envelopes with the logos on 'em. But iirc, the Red Sox sent theirs in a plain brown envelope with only the return address.

Do you remember how cool it was to be that age and expecting your own mail all the time? And then the package would come with the official team logo. Addressed to you. Me. Oh my! That was eight year old nirvana.
