I already hatted Mat Latos so now that he's in the division I can hat him even more.

And the Reds somehow get more for Alfredo Simon: 2013 1st-rounder Jonothan Crawford and super-interesting Eugenio Suarez.

Again, for 33-year-old this guy, with 3.8 bWAR over 7 seasons, career. He's Gee, only five years older.

I'd have been in on Kemp at that price. He was 100% by the end of last season.

The Marlins are continuing in a predictable cycle of going all in for one year followed by a fire sale the following year and mediocrity for a few years after that. I'm guessing it won't work this time either.

Monster three-team/eleven player trade involving the Pads, Rays & Nats, mostly centering around former top prospect & 2013 RoY Will Myers (just 24 y/o but already headed for his 3rd org) who will join Matt Kemp in a suddenly revamp San Diego OF

Padres get:
Wil Myers, OF (from TB)
Ryan Hanigan, C (TB)
Gerardo Reyes, RHP (TB)
Jose Castillo, LHP (TB)

Rays get:
Steven Souza, OF (WSH)
Rene Rivera, C (SD)
Jake Bauers, 1B (SD)
Burch Smith, RHP (SD)
Travis Ott, LHP (WSH)

Nationals get:
Joe Ross, RHP (SD)
Player to be named (Trea Turner, SS) (SD)

Will take a while to sort all that out
Meanwhile, I have no idea what Tampa is up to this winter.

So if I'm reading this trade correctly...
- the Nationals give up a soon to be 26 y/o corner OF with some power projections but also only 23 ML ABs to date, plus a pitcher out of HS they got in the 25th round just two years back who is, at best, four or more years away from the majors
- and in return got two 1st round draft picks: Joe Ross - 25th overall in 2011, pitched in AA in 2014; Trea Turner, SS who was last year's #13 overall (3 picks after Conforto) and was a college player who should move up quickly

Turner is not officially part of the trade since he was drafted less than one year ago, but his name is all over the reports here.
Not sure I get it.

Last time a Rookie of the Year got dealt so shortly after winning the award: Pat Zachry.

Players who get traded tend to get traded.

it brings to mind an old joke about a warehouse filled with canned sardines that is sold from one wholesaler to another, until finally a purchaser actually opens one of the cans and discovers that the sardines have gone bad. He complains to the seller who says "schmuck, these sardines are for buying & selling, not for eating."

The Mets did that 'shh, PTBNL' bit with recently draftees last year. If teams are gonna be all hush hush about it but do it anyway, why bother with the rule?

The reports I saw framed the Nats bit as turning a good prospect that was blocked into two that are just further away.

I like it, if only because it's wild and wooly and we'll be taking the temperature of this deal like it's a roast-- many, many times, for a long time.

NOTE: I'm a little paranoid about roast temperature.

Because the teams don't actually announce the player, it just leaks out via various means.

Two that are further away but are potentially MUCH better.
Turner in particular is a recent top half of the 1st round pick out of college who plays SS, can hit (at least so far), and has top of the chart speed.

yeah. Of course guys generally project with greater upside the farther away they are. Haven't hit the pitfalls yet.

I'm not sure how to feel about it. Am I bummed the Nationals boosted their farm system a little, or encouraged that they weakened their immediate depth in 2015?

And then, when spring training starts, hes going to report to Peoria and train with the Padres. Hes going to stay in their system until June 14th, in fact, meaning that hell spend the first two months of the minor league season playing for a team that actually traded him before Christmas.

The Matt Kemp deal has reportedly hit a snag, as the Padres' physical has supposedly revealed that he is suffering from arthritis in both hips.

It's a big snag, as the Phillies are in the mix too, as the Dodgers already sent one of the players they got in the trade, Zach Eflin, on to Philadelphia, so you can't just undo it. This might go to the league, who I imagine would insist that Dodgers throw some hip insurance money at San Diego.

Showing evidence of arthritis in both hips has the Padres mulling over whether to nullify the Kemp deal.
That, folks, is why you always hear the phrase: 'Pending results of a physical'

San Diego stays surprisingly active by dealing a couple of highly touted prospects to Oakland for catcher Derek Norris plus some spare parts.

SAN DIEGO -- The hits keep on coming for the Padres -- or at least that's the hope -- as general manager A.J. Preller has apparently landed yet another big bat for the team's offense.

The Padres traded for outfielder Justin Upton and a low-level player to be named from the Braves early Friday, dealing left-handed pitcher Max Fried, a former first-round Draft pick, in addition to infielders Jace Peterson, Dustin Peterson and outfielder Mallex Smith, a baseball source told MLB.com.

Two guys named Max and Mallex; and two guys named Peterson. Maybe if we threw in Rick Peterson we would have had a shot.

If I just heard that name without context I would have assumed he was one of the Superhero guys currently in the polling battle in the other forum.

Padres certainly upgraded their OF in the last few weeks with Kemp, Myers, and now Upton
They were pretty much a mess out there last season, using 15 different starters with only Seth Smith starting even half the games at any one position (81 starts exactly in LF) or getting more than 81 total starts out there (118 overall)

They have like 5 right fielders now though. Facsinating transformation anyway, they are doing it without upsetting their pitching too much.

MFYs get Nathan Evoldi & Garrett Jones from the Fish for David Phelps and Martin Prado.

Yanks also get a prospect and give away $$.
