Two-out Headley single and Teixiera homer and the Yanks are in the game 9-5. Another baserunner or two and this could really set him up to be the last guy at the plate if they leave him in.

Drew's up. I hadn't realized, but Shmeter is DHing. Gotta keep those legs healthy for... something.

All over now, as ex-Mets great Darren O'Day gets Gardner looking to end it with the Captain on deck.
Ryan played short today; I assume Drew was playing second?

It's officially Elimination Day!

Game ends with Jeter on deck. Unable to hit a clutch home run that will knock the division title out of the Orioles' hands and deliver it to its "rightful place."

Call me sentimental, but I always get verklempt on Elimination Day. It's so beautiful, even if the celebrations aren't as raucous as they used to be.

Gardner had the grace to strike out looking and spare Jeter another clutchfail opportunity.

Hasta maana, Seor Eliminado.

It's a good way to start the new year!

I think they are as raucous as they used to be (esp in the locker room) but there's not a trace of spontaneity in them anymore, imo.

They all look like stock vid game celebrations.

Current Weather Channel outlook for Thursday, a now completely meaningless ballgame with the Orioles pretty much locked into the second seed, a lot of cold and windy rain for most of the day and night!

Its raining.
Who will be the reporter who says the Heavens are crying because its Jeter's last home game?

On second thought, they all will.
Never mind.

Hamill: Even Mets fans can agree, Derek Jeter was a player worthy of admiration particularly for his taste in women

The Daily News' Denis Hamill making his move in the race to the bottom.

Don't tempt me *readies to hum Odd Couple theme*! ;)

It's going to rain because even God is sick of all this Jeterpalooza.

Now THIS is the song that should have accompanied that Gatorade commercial

And now, the end is here
its time for Jetes to just retire
His bat has gotten slow
his range is gone, he dont inspire.
To the Bronx, he bids farewell.
No more Os, or Rays, or Blue Jays.
Just one more trip, but its a pip,
he goes to Fennnnn-Way

Cheap gifts, he got a slew,
most of them crap, but in his honor.
The tributes were all his due,
or so I heard, from Ian OConnor.
He laughed, he gripped and grinned,
but cmon, what else could he say?
But then, just check next week,
theyll be on Eeeeee-Bay.

But what of the sport? It wont survive,
sans Number 2, or some such jive.
Without his clutch, without his leaps.
But as ye sow, so shall ye reap.
So when youre gone, the game will go on.
Go hit the Higggggh-Waaaaay.

When I was twenty-one
It was a very good year
It was a very good year for city press
Who wrote with great flair
They'd see my rear
And come undone
When I was twenty-one

By the way, tonight is the anniversary of Willie Mays Night.

As we know, Willie did everything wrong-wrong-wrong, and Jeter is somehow showing us the correct way to do every thing.

BAM! A canon ball of cool right there!

So do you suppose there's some just-hired flunky from Steiner Sports Collectibles whose job it is tonight to follow Jeter around and bag-up for sale the final dump he takes at the YSIII clubhouse bathroom?

I wonder if The Eagle will make a plate appearance tonight.
Maybe a fly-by by five F-15's!
