"Xander Bogaerts" is something like "Garden of the Defender of the People," or "Defender of the People's Garden," if you prefer. Which is a little funny, as he's sitting this postseason mostly because of his young, untempered glove (compared to Drew).

Reminds me of the days when Tim Teufel ("devil" in German) would bat against Jim Gott ("God" in German).

Neat. Never caught that as a kid. (2 for 9 with a home run, by the way.)

Seaver is supposedly Ango-Saxon derived version of the Latin "severus," meaning "one with a grave or austere demeanor." Have my doubts.

Koosman comes from the Dutch, for "chosen man."

Gentry, of course, comes from the Norman-English word for "wealthy man with terrible taste in pants."

Coleman means "someone who burns coal".
Casey called Choo-Choo Coleman a "good low ball catcher".
Maybe Casey thought it meant "someone who digs coal".

Verlander is Flemish for "dweller on or by the pasture land."

? It doesn't matter what comes, Pants are better when tight, and Sugary as boiled-down Sprite!
Nothing gets to you-- get on-base, wield five tools-- when Mets are sportin' David Wright!
Mets go better! (Much less punchless!) Mets go better, when Mets are f-in' full of Wright!

Vin Scully just mentioned that the surname of Red Schoendist is German for "beautiful servant."

I should change that to "Bringer of bombs".

It's not Scheisskopf is it?

Badass!

Mine roughly translates into "lead mountain", and if you saw me run, you'd know how appropriate that is.
