Marlon Byrd beats out an infield hit on a slow grounder to short for his second hit of the night (and just the Pirates' fourth). Two on, two out for Swing Hard and Pray-dro Alvarez.

Even crazier infield hit by Alvarez gets Bucs on the board

Ball hits bag. Ball flies over Adams. Alvarez hits bag. Morneau hits plate.

Mass hysteria.

Bottom 7, and Wainwright's batting. Interesting.

Friggin Cardinals get lucky even when they get unlucky. Carpenter's throw to first misses the mark by 8 feet but rolls directly to the catcher instead of into a dugout or something.

The real nutty part was that Carpenter's errant throw to 1st almost wound up getting Morneau at home.

Do you suppose the AL clubs aware that you're allowed to get 7 complete innings in in under 2:10 ?

That was almost like late-90s-2000 MFY shit, where they got several post-season outs not despite missed cut-offs and overthrows but because of them.

lucky again.

I'm beginning to hate the Cardinals with the same passion I hate the MFYs.

Gonna have to see the slow-mo on that one after
the commercials.

With a little ump-y help, granted.

I thought that was the correct call.
And if it wasn't it was by a hair and could have gone either way.
And even if he was safe it shouldn't have been that close.

The earlier one where Byrd was doubled off was more understandable because of the shift. This one was right in front of Walker.

And now none of it is going to matter.

So the Cardinals let Pujols go and an 8th round draft pick in Alan Craig comes in and comes pretty darn close to matching over two seasons what Pujols has done since leaving [.311/.364/.488] while setting records for RiSP figures and all for a fraction of the price.
And then he goes down in mid-season and gets replaced by a 23rd round rookie (Adams) who swats 17 HRs in less than 300 ABs [.284/.335/.503]

And all while we're trying to get Davis OR Duda going for more than a few weeks here or there.

makes you realize it sucks both ways. Beltran, I forgive you.

K, now I'm a Puig fan.

Sad to see the Bucs lose.
I'll be rooting for the Cards, if only to show that Tony LaRussa wasn't that smart.

Let's not encourage it

I'm wondering someday if Beltran will have become the greatest post-season player ever, and it will be statistically demonstrable to establish, if it isn't true already.

If he's not there, he's close-- his postseason OPS (1.214) and slugging (.761!) numbers are the best in history (topping Ruth in both), and has the second-highest HR rate (16-in-172 PAs) in postseason history (just behind Ruth, and well ahead of postseason mashers like Pujols, Manny Ramirez, Mantle, and "Mr. October"). Also, he's 11-for-11 in steals; nobody else with 10 attempts is perfect.
