Mets are now 52-60, with a winning percentage of .464. Still not good, but much better than where it was when I last checked in to this thread.

With 50 games remaining, Mets currently project to a final record of 75-87.

Mets are now 64-81, with a winning percentage of .441. They project to a final record of 71-91.

My prediction was for them to finish 80-82, so I need the Mets to go 16-1 to win this little contest.

On course for a record

When the Mets moved into Citi Field five years ago, they were also, as it turned out, settling into fourth place in the National League East and making themselves comfortable. If their season ended Friday, they would finish in that very undistinguished spot for the fifth straight season. It would be a franchise record, dubious as it might seem, for never in their uphill history have they ended up staying in the same place for so long.

Even in the 1960s, when the Mets made a name for themselves as one of the worst teams in baseball history, they finished 10th, and last, only in their first four years of existence. In the fifth year, 1966, they finished next to last, in ninth.

The Mets have 73 wins with two games left to play. Here are our pre-season predictions, in readable format. (Bold, italicized contestants are in contention):

willets 107-59 (4 tiebreakers? what?)
fman99 97-65
edgymd 97-65
seawolf 88-74
metsmarathon 87-75
Ceetar 86-76
metsguymich 85-77
swanswan 81-81
Grimm 80-82
Transmonk 79-83
leiterwags 78-84
VicSage 77-85
batmags 76-86
doctee 74-88
msf62 74-88
G-Fafif 73-89
sharpie 73-89

GWreck 72-90
bmfc1 71-91
nymr83 71-91
Lefty 68-94
ashie62 67-95

If the Mets go 2-0 over this weekend, then it's a three-way tie between batmags (that's me), DocTee and MSF62
If the Mets go 1-1 over this weekend, then it's a two-way tie between DocTee and MSF62
If the Mets go 0-2 over this weekend, then it's a two-way tie between G-Fafif and Sharpie.

Congratulations to
doctee 74-88
msf62 74-88

Honorable Mention to G-fafif who was one more loss away from back-to-back titles.

My guess was six games too optimistic. Not too bad, I guess. I hope that next spring I have (legitimate) reason to predict them to win 90 or more.

I'd have been up there with you if I predicted. As a fan what's the use of not being optimistic? If I couldn't be optimistic I'd end up following them like I did in the late 70's and early 90's, which was from a distance.

It's tough being the smartest (sharing that one), best looking, and probably oldest guy in the room.

I think the only thing that keeps me optimistic is looking back to 1983, 1997, & 2003 and considering that no one expected those teams to win a World Series, a pennant, or a division title in three years. So, I'm predicting big things for the 2016 Mets.
