Valentine, who managed the Mets (1996-2002), would be featured on about 20 games, mostly marquee matchups like the Subway Series. He would be seen on SNY�s new pre-pregame show. Valentine would also fill in for Bobby Ojeda, SNY�s No. 1 studio analyst, on his off days.

Regarding his going to the dugout: Longshot but maybe some exposure close to the club positions him to make that move. He wouldn't be the first broadcaster-to-manager.

Yeah, if you want him managing the team, or part of the braintrust at all, this could only be a good thing. Better even than the Feliciano thing.

If nothing else his presence (even if only on TV from the midtown studio) is going to plant the idea in peeps' heads and from there it's not a long step to some media-mind speculating during the first five-game losing streak.

Bobby V would have to dazzle and Terry C would have to fizzle for Mustachioed Lazarus to rise again given how badly things went in Boston, but it would be fun to have him around, even in the studio. He was radiant on ESPN, I thought.

Bobby O got my MVP vote last year...which looked really strange next to all the votes for Buster Posey.

The perception that Valentine was responsible for a "disaster in Boston" will probably make it unlikely he'll get another managerial job, but I think he was a scapegoat for a bigger institutional crisis with the Red Sox and a convenient target for the ignorant, entitled, reactionary whiners who make up the greater part of the so-called Fenway 'Faithful.'

Fair enough, but don't discount reasons why he never had a MLB in-uniform job in between the Mets and Red Sox, as well as Rangers and Mets.

Bobby's a smart guy. But.

At the end of his tenure in 2002, Met fans couldn't wait to be rid of him. There's nobody better at in-game maneuvering (provided he has the tools, and it's something that's less important in the AL), but outside of those nine innings, he's not all that wonderful. He manipulated players and trashed them in the press, something that seemed to carry on in his Red Sox days. His ego is still an issue, as it may be difficult to fit inside the reduced footprint of Citi Field.

Putting him as an analyst/looming managerial possibility is a typically Metsian doofus move (if it happens).

I know there's a lot of Bobby V love out there, but I'm not on board.

I'lll come out and say that, if there has ever been a consensus among Mets fans any time in the internet era, it certainly wasn't that they were united in their haste to get rid of Valentine.

Yah, twas obvious to those of us paying attention that Bobby V wasn't the issue; it was really Steve Phillips -- more accurately, the little resources they'd provided him (scouts, assistants barely existed then). For BV's career to have advanced under those conditions was unrealistic and he paid the price first.

Lefty's point is overstated in that there certainly was never any consensus among NYM fans that Bobby had to go. But at the same time what those of us who are Bobby fans have to remember is that BV had a huge number of detractors even when things were going well back in '99 or '00, and then even more later on.
Nor do I think, even though I kind of brought it up, that this move makes him a manager in waiting. I said that it's only natural that someone will bring it up at some point due to Terry being on the last year of a deal and particularly so if the season is heading south somewhere prior to September.

Is this "doofus move" of getting Bobby in the TV studio some kind of Wilponian plan to stir up such speculation?
I tend to doubt it. They've always claimed that there's a wall between the team and the network. Now maybe that's not entirely true although the appearance of independence is a helluva lot thicker than the paper-thin barrier that exists between YES & their MFY overlords. So even if Fred does have final veto power that he simply didn't use here that's not the same as saying he engineered the whole thing.

For the record, I don't think this is step one leading to Bobby II. Maybe if he doesn't blow up any bridges over the next nine months or so and Terry is not retained at the end of the season BV will be one of those considered for the post, I dunno. It was always tough to get a reading on how he and the Wilpon's parted back a decade ago now or whether Sandy really has the autonomy to hire his own guy regardless of potential objections. And, yeah, the Boston experience, while certainly not all BV's fault, isn't going to add to the odds he gets re-hired.

Reconciliation is almost always an impressive achievement. The 'Pons have had a handful of opportunities to re-engage with him, and I'm glad if they found one where the time was ripe, and the position appropriate.

But speaking of engagement, I hope the position would be big enough to keep Valentine engaged. He has a few other interests, and disengagement was certainly one of the criticisms that dogged him in Boston, fairly or no.

As much as I'd like to see BV, or just about any other human being, replace TC, I think that this is simply SNY trying to improve ratings. It's the BV show! It's the Gary, Keith and/or Ron show! Ignore what's in front of you--stay tuned as Guys! will be interviewing some celebrity very soon!
