I suppose there is not chance the player to be named later is Bay.

They really liked Bay in Boston for some reason I could never figure out.

28 posts about Kelly Shoppach in less than 24 hours - a record setting number in the category of posts to talent ratio.

I'm pretty sure a search here for "Jason Bay" would definitely blow that record out of the water.

And so would "Jose Lima," although the total would be considerably less if the search were "Jose Lima -wife"

Unfortunately, the "Welcome Jose Lima" thread became merged with the "Welcome to Ms. Lima" sentiments by the second post, thanks to, um, me.

I think it was because he actually hit the ball when he was there.

Someday the Mets' array of backup catchers (Thole perhaps among them) can back up Cam Maron, profiled today by Adam Rubin.

Let's see if they have Shoppach catch Dickey for the rest of his starts. That is an audition that is worth something, if not necessarily Beato.

It all makes the timing of this trade even tougher to understand.

not really. They get 6 weeks of up close and personal evaluation of a guy they had on their radar for next year anyway. And get him to get his feet wet with the pitchers he'd catch.

All for a guy they were going to DFA. Which clears up a 40 man roster spot that was being used by a minor leaguer (Shoppach is going to take Nickeas' or Johnson's)

You don't give away prospects (however loosely that term may apply to Beato) for EVALUATION time for a platoon/backup catcher. Seriously?

Wait... we knew Beato was being DFA'd?

I think that can be assumed by him being named. Not whether or not he was ever going to be useful, but the Mets only gave him 4 innings, and need relievers that can get the job done/strike guys out. So he clearly wasn't impressing them, and despite Alderson suggesting they haven't started thinking about the 2013 budget yet, they know they'll need roster spots and if they decided Beato was the 40th man and were going to DFA him to get him off the roster anyway.. I think this makes more sense than Alderson was playing dice games with the Red Sox and lost?

You do if he's not a prospect and simply a AAAA reliever that you don't believe is going to work out.

I mean, the Mets DFAd Fernando Martinez and Josh Satin this year. Those guys may be higher 'prospects' than Beato.

So you mean DFA'd in December or something. OK, I guess. But I see seven or eight free agents and three or so guys to (more or less safely) slide off the roster before him.

It would be hilarious if Shoppach re-upped, Terry and Bobby Vgot the axe, and the Mets brought on Bobby V at their helm.

Speaking of F-Mart, has he spent any time in Houston?

"That message came from Gonzalez's phone, but those weren't his words. Or even his feelings. He really didn't know what the message said. And if the message looks bad, well, he had nothing to do with it. The primary guy was, um, the guy who isn't here anymore."

Come on. Seriously? I'm supposed to buy that? That's pathetic. It's worse. It's pathetque.

Agreed, Edgy. Gonzalez let Shoppach use his phone? Shoppach knows enough about mobile phones that he was tweeting pix from the Smithsonian yesterday--he would have used his own. Someone there is using the guy that left as a scapegoat.

Speaking of BV:

The stuff about Tim Bogar was interesting.

I think Congressman Weiner was using a similar denial ... at least for a while.

I was thinking of the Reagan Administration during Iran-Contra. "Who's dead? Casey's dead? Well, then, this was all his idea."
