Jason Bay on the 15 day DL with "a non-displaced fracture of a rib on the left side"

Zack Lutz has been called up.
Zachary Craig Lutz - 6' 1" - 220; BR/TR; 25 y/o (26 in June) from Reading Pennsylvania
5th round draft pick in 2007 out of Alvernia College in Reading.

Lutz, for those of you keeping track, [u:1of7xebj]IS[/u:1of7xebj] a legal SCRABBLE word. Zack is not.
Also I'm betting he's the first NYM with a Z in both his first and last name. Lee Mazzilli and Chris Canizzaro both had two Zs but not one in each.

And it would appear that there is room for Torres and Nieuwenhuis after all.

Note to the world: Too many capable players is never a problem.

ZZ: Zach lutZ

anyway, wonder how he'll be used. I presume Valdespin in the outfield now.

I'm more excited for ZZ than for Valdespin, but looks like Jordany probably the one ticketed for more actual playing time. Make it count.

You are correct. Of all the names I have in the UMDB database tables, only 7 have Z's in the first name and last name.

Enzo Hernandez
Gonzalo Marquez
Elizardo Ramirez
Eliezer Alfonzo
Zoilo Sanchez
Zach Lutz
Robinzon Diaz

Zach Lutz and Zoilo Sanchez are Mets minor leaguers. The others are all... others. (Most likely Mets opponents, but I haven't checked for sure.)

Really, I'm just excited about the progress we're making toward Met1000, our cybernetic franchise savior.

Zoilo, by the way, is a great name! Sounds like some kind of butter substitute. And his middle name is "Parahoy"

In retrospect, I wish I had named my kids (both of them!) Zoilo Parahoy.

Ah well, there goes Bay , this injury will no doubt affect him all season.

I wouldn't think he will be back anytime soon with a fractured rib.

Non-displaced. Could be a hairline thing. We'll see. Folks were sure rooting for this not a few short weeks ago.

Not me mate, I actually thought Bay was making small strides, hitting the ball with authority , arms extended and all that good stuff...getting dare I even say it, his chanfidence back?

I think this has preceded every Bay DL stint the last two years.

But won't the Mets miss Bay's [crossout:2yrdiepk]clutch hitting leadership power stroke[/crossout:2yrdiepk] expertly preparation of Canadian bacon?

We also would have accepted "playoff hockey insights."

And will you recall / the most famous Zoilo of all?
That would of course be 1965 AL MVP Zoilo Vesalles
The Cuban-born Versalles had himself a more than respectable 12 year big league career highlighted by his season for the pennant winning '65 Twins when the 5' 10"/146-lb SS managed to lead the AL in PAs, ABs, Runs scored, 2Bs, 3Bs, and Total Bases (also Ks) for a seemingly modest (for an MVP anyway) slash line of .273/.319/.462 in the midst of that offensively challenged era. Also won the Gold Glove.

Within two years after that his offensive game had totally collapsed. He hung around for a few more years with the Angels, Indians, Senators and then popped up briefly with the Braves in 1971, hitting around or under .200 in most of those seasons.

I later read a story about him pushing shopping carts in the Twin-Cities area as he became a kind of symbol of the former Latin-American athlete who had fallen on hard times as the result of possessing limited job skills and English proficiency. He died in Bloomington, Minnesota in 1995 at the age of 55.

so, one thing that came up is Bay's option. if he goes down longer than 15ish games, he may be in jeopardy of not making 500 ab's this season, meaning the only way to get his option would be to get 600 PA next year.

here's to hoping that Kirk AND Torres start smoking the ball so that when Bay's back, he's doesn't get much playing time. Maybe we can then package him and a bunch of money to boston, if crawford (who's also visiting Dr J Andrews) can't come back anytime soon..

I don't see that this option is anything to be concerned with, at all.

If it gets that far, the Mets will release Jason Bay in 2013 on the day before he gets the at bat that triggers the option year.

The only way that option vests is if Bay's on pace to hit like 45 home runs with a .900+ OPS next year. and you know what? that might be okay.

You haven't heard of Zoilo Versalles?
