Wow. It's gonna be a lot easier to hit homeruns this year.

Not that that one hasn't been shot down a million times, but Rubin shot it down again tonight.

Manager Terry Collins indicated that reliever Manny Acosta likely has already earned a roster spot based on his performance last season. Frank Francisco, Jon Rauch, Ramon Ramirez and Tim Byrdak are also assured spots. Among those fighting for the final two spots are Batista, Bobby Parnell, D.J. Carrasco, Pedro Beato, Daniel Herrera and Garrett Olson.

Gotta figure Bobby Pee makes the cut. Then it's really Carrasco v Hererra v Beato.

Probably.

Carrasco has the leg up via contract probably. And Hererra behind the 8-ball with not being on the 40 man. But Collins really likes Beato.

NY Mets manager Terry Collins tells Josh Thole he's not guaranteed starting catcher's job

That's like giving Mark Brunell snaps and pretending Sanchez might not play.

Luckily, that's not what Collins was saying at all. He was just emphasizing that Thole needs to improve to be considered a major league catcher.

The way the team is contructed right now, I hope no one is guaranteed a starting job.

We name starters the old fashioned way...they earn it.

Too many guys seem to be virtually guaranteed a starting job. With a deeper team, Dillon Gee, for example, would have a lot more on the line going into spring training than he does now. So would Andres Torres, Mike Pelfrey, and perhaps Ruben Tejada. Not to mention Jason Bay, who's in a whole other category.

How many Mets -- or for that matter players in general -- do you suppose are working on a new grip or an alteration to their swing convinced it's just what they needed only to find themselves a year from now blaming their lost season on a "bad habit I got into during Spring Training"?

Probably the same many that are currently at Duffy's eating a fatty dinner so they can show up next season in the best shape of their lives.

@joshlewinstuff
U haven't heard "loud" til you've heard mets strength coach brad andress run morning stretch. Think gilbert gottfried as a pro wrestler.

Liking Lewin more and more.

Early impressions of mets camp: jon rauch is about 6'13" and terry collins is a dead ringer for hank's dad on "king of the hill."

It's like we're looking at the world through the same eyes.

Wright skips intra-squad game with "stiff rib cage" (isn't it supposed to be stiff?)

Noble @ mlb.com -- ... Wright provided half-answers and spoke vaguely, and with each word he spoke Saturday morning, the WhatEverItIs that caused him to be scratched from one of the intrasquad game lineups became more curious.
Official word from the Mets is that Wright has stiffness of the left rib cage. Mets manager Terry Collins pointed to his own side and indicated that was the troubled area for his third baseman. Wright wasn't even that precise. He called in stiffness, period, end of diagnosis.

And, of course, the usual caveat of: "If these were real games I'd be playing", was thrown in for good measure -- a phrase which might trail only "I'm in the best shape of my life" and "flu-like symptoms" in the pantheon of vague fitness claims.

Maybe if the media didn't demand specific and elaborate details to every little ache and pain.. If you send a gaggle of reporters to Wright and then Collins for this they're gonna have to say something or they'd criticize them for not talking, and if they let Wright play in a meaningless 3/3 game anyway they'll all pretend they have medical degrees and kill the Mets for letting him play with it.

Well, asking more questions if the answer is questionable, yes.
