Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 Baseball America reports that the Mets have released Casey Fossum and Donnie Tabb. If you're like me, you had no idea Fossum was still theirs to release and that Tabb existed at all. But he was and he did. What's more, Casey Fossum played three games for Jerry Manuel's Mets back in 2009, which means there must be memories out there. Your job is to summon them. Somehow. Here's Casey Fossum and his winssum wife.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 First guy to wear 47 post-Glavine. That's all I got.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 20, 2012 Author Posted January 20, 2012 Donnie Tabb was author of all of 13 RBI in 44 games with the Gulf Coasters in 2010 and 2011, and not having a GCL team to send him back to for a third year, he's sent packing.Donnie, if you career continues, maybe work on the smile at the next stop: And thus ends the dream of being the first Met with plugs in his earlobes. Or Angel. Or Red. Or whatever.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 First Met named Casey since the first Casey. The new Casey pitched in a bumblefest of a game that was reminiscent of Ol' Case's Mets. Never appeared on a baseball card in a Mets uniform.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 20, 2012 Author Posted January 20, 2012 I almost kinda sorta take it back, as this isn't truly the end of the tenure extending from his 2009 appearances. He was set free and signed and released by both the Yankees and Cubs in 2010, before rejoining the Mets organization in 2011.But he didn't get a going-away thread the first time, at least not one that I can find. So we continue.Born in Phillie territory in Cherry Hill, NJ, but went to high school in Texas. Nicknamed "The Blade."
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 I remember Fossum as a 1st round draft pick for the Sawx and one labeled 'untouchable' by many fans as he worked his way through their system.Eventually dealt to Arizona in the Curt Schilling trade which, in retrospect, is a deal I suspect the Fenway faithful are probably OK with now.Since then he's toiled for Tampa, San Diego, Pittsburgh, Detroit, the Mets, the Yanx, the Cubs, and then back to the Mets (signed Feb 2011) - seeing ML action during that journey only for the Rays, Tigers & Mets.In all those transactions only the DBacks to the Rays was via a trade. Every team since released him to be subsequently picked up by the next as a FA.I think it says a lot about the second chances of first round picks ... and of the value of being left-handed.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 20, 2012 Author Posted January 20, 2012 Oops. The perils of not giving threads specific titles.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 I like how you opened both versions of the thread with a challenge. And that Johnny's memory was the same both times.
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 Didn't he make his Mets debut by being brought in with the bases loaded and no one out by some clueless fuck of a manager? I remember something.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 20, 2012 Author Posted January 20, 2012 Bases loaded and two outs, anyway. Promptly walked sad-sack eighth-place hitter Joseph Thurston to tie the game.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted February 1, 2012 Author Posted February 1, 2012 After the Mets pick over the carcass of the offseason marketplace, the Orioles pick over what the Mets have left behind. Those O's sign Casey Fossum to a minor league contract.
