I remember late in the season I noticed that several players in the Mets (and opposing team) starting lineup had both first and last names that were valid SCRABBLE words.

Inspired by that, I belatedly decided to put together an all-time Mets team comprised solely of players and coaches who fit that criteria. Here's what I came up with:

C - Norm Sherry
1B - Dick Smith
2B - Bobby Valentine
3B - Ray Knight
SS - Jay Bell
LF - Mike Vail
CF - Angel Pagan
RF - Tom Grieve
DH - Mike Piazza

SP - Frank Viola, Jay Hook, Randy Jones, Randy Tate
RP - Bob Miller, Tom Hall, Dean Chance

Mgr - Art Howe
Coaches - Rube Walker, Chuck Cottier, Chip Hale, Bobby Wine

Dennis Cook gets to be in that bullpen.

Read too quickly to see you needed both. Dennis Cook does not make this team. Get out of the picture, Cook.

As Dennis leaves he graciously cedes his spot in the photo shoot to Cliff Cook

Yes, definitely.

I was gonna put Ken Singleton in the outfield, but SINGLETON wasn't deemed to be a word by the online Scrabble dictionary.

I think the official dictionary goes up to eight letters and then says "go ahead and use Webster's", or something to that effect.

Joe Foy
Jerry Cram
Terry Leach

[crossout]Mike Piazza would have to be the starting catcher.[/crossout] Already noted by Ben Grimm as DH. I block DHs out of my view.

Maybe. I remember one about point values of player names (like MIENTKIEWICZ) but I don't recall one looking for valid first and last names. But maybe there was such a thread and I've forgotten it.

Heath Bell's hungry for a shot at the roster; Bob Bailor would put up money for a slot. John DeMerit doesn't expect you'll give him a chance-- what with his bad locker-room rep-- but he'd like one just the same.

Those triples, they are rare. (Even moreso with the walls coming in.)

Joe Hicks
Roger Mason? (OE: Yes, Roger Mason)

Ray Searage and Butch Metzger really oughta be.

If proper nouns were OK, every name of every Met player ever would be allowed.

Just remembered that.

How about the other Bob Johnson, then?

How about the other Bob Miller?
