Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted July 18, 2011 Posted July 18, 2011 I had a great session DJing at turntable with some powerpop fans last night, when it somehow came to be about baseball, and someone played a Kate Jacobs song called "Rey Ordonez." I fell out of my chair in awe of its Metliness, I think there's even a sample of Howie Rose at the tail end. It's actually a new song despite the seeming "old" references, about a traveling band tuning in Mets games from the road. It's perfect! You can stream it on Kate's websitehttp://www.katejacobsmusic.com/www.katejacobsmusic.com/home_game.htmlThe lyrics are:Rey OrdonezJose ViscianoCarlos BaergaRey OrdonezBobby BonillaEdgardo Alfonsothey were our friendson the radioin the dark vanand the tired bandlooks out the windowat the white lineand the black skyand its midnightand its outta herehes running homewere fifty-seven miles from San Antonioout in Queensback home at Sheatheyre playing under lights that make the night look like the dayleaning on the windowi see a million starsIm making up my next lifefeel the citys dim glowI wonder where you arewere staying with Scottys ex-wifeand its outta herehes running homewere 16 miles outside of San Antonioout in Queensback home at Sheatheyre playing under lights that make the night look like the dayJose ViscianoCarlos BaergaRey OrdonezBobby BonillaEdgardo Alfonsothey were our friendson the radioin the dark vanand its midnighthes running homeand its midnightin the dark vanand the tired bandlooks out the windowand its outta hereand its midnightand its midnighthes running homeYou've obviously got to buy all her albums NOW!!!!
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2011 Posted July 18, 2011 As I said on turntable.fm, "It's a power pop song about a player with no power or pop."
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted July 18, 2011 Posted July 18, 2011 It's funny how this team may have been more Latino before Omar took over, but the snorting contempt followed his ascendency.

Yet the narrative is that it started once Omar was hired.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted July 18, 2011 Posted July 18, 2011 Agreed with that. They were radio broadcasting in Spanish in their first season in 1962!
A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2011 Posted July 18, 2011 'it's outta here, he's running home' is her -ex? cause, man, it's probably not literal abt Ordonez, right? I mean he did hit 1 that year.Awesome song. Need to be 'her fan' and never sign into TT.fm again anyway. Like that place, just always seem to miss u guys.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2011 Posted July 18, 2011 Stunningly beautiful. Great find. And the second song to celebrate an underloved era.[youtube:w8krt3p7]aeIeqGA-Ogc[/youtube:w8krt3p7]
