Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted July 10, 2011 Posted July 10, 2011 biggest example of the Yankee ignorance is how they celebrated Jeter passing Gehrig and totally ignored him passing Ruth.

You will practically need to swear off all television since the Yankee worship, particularly of Jeter, is practically pandemic.

MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2011 Posted July 10, 2011 My wife asked me if there's a 3,001 hit club.Later
Met Hunter Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2011 Posted July 10, 2011 I wonder if the 2000 walks Babe Ruth had may have kept him out of the 3000 hit club. Or those 6 years he wasted pitching for the Red Sox and winning them championships. Good luck catching his 1300+ extra base hits Captain Amazing.I wonder if the death blow and early retirement at age 36 kept Lou Gehrig out of the 3000 hit club as well as the 500 home run club. I wonder if he even knew such a club existed and if anyone cared.I wonder if the ankle injury Joe DiMaggio had kept him out of the 3000 hit club. Or the fact that he had class and dignity as a pro to hang em up while he still resembled the player that he was.I wonder if Mickey Mantle would say something like "If i knew 3000 hits was such a big deal, I would have done it", or would have just said 'fuck it' and got shitfaced.I wonder if ARod is actually jealous of El Capitain, as some have said, or will the tables turn when its all said and done and he too is in the 3000 hit club as well as the 700 home run, and Jeter can just go fuck himself.
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2011 Author Posted July 10, 2011 Met Hunter with a great post. Also Joe D. served three years in the military and Mickey Mantle missed years because of his bad knees.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted July 10, 2011 Posted July 10, 2011 It's not so much that I hate Jeter, it's that Jeter is nowhere near as special as he's exaggerated to be, and he's treated like he doesn't have the same faults (ego, greed, perhaps cheating) as every other sports figure.

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted July 10, 2011 Posted July 10, 2011 I get Methunter's point, but I don't think it's class and dignity that leads a player to retire before he has to. I think it's fear.I don't think DiMaggio was any classier than the next dude. He just had the narrative on his side, so it wasn't so much that his actions fit a defintiion of classy, but that the definition was altered to fit his actions.Just like Jeter.
Piggiestomatoes Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2011 Posted July 10, 2011 "Narrative on his side" is a bit Machiavellian. For my two cents, DiMaggio realized he was done, Mantle was just coming up and it was what it was. I'd argue all day that DiMaggio was at least twice the player DJ3k is. 10 WS in 13 seasons and 9 wins. Missed the prime of his career (28 to 30 years old) to military service. Didn't see combat and basically did PR but he enlisted all the same. Three-time MVP and if you look at the '37 and '48 voting, it looks like was was robbed.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted July 10, 2011 Posted July 10, 2011 "Narrative on his side" is a bit Machiavellian. How so?

I think it's fear.Or laziness. It's a lot of prep work. Especially if your body isn't that healthy and you have nagging injuries, etc. like Pettitte. And other guys try their hardest, even when their body knows it's over. Like Delgado. I'm not sure one is 'classier' than the other.

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 I'm not sure what you think I'm implying, but maybe we disagree about what's obvious. And yeah, I see some class in somebody working for months and years to get little more time on the field and stave off baseball oblivion.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 wanna start a conspiracy? you know how they mark each Jeter ball towards 3000? Maybe they also altered them to go a bit farther..

bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2011 Author Posted July 12, 2011 This week's SI covers. Pick your poison: Jeter or the MFPs. Either way, this week's issue might go right into the recycle bin:
