Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 Part of it is that the Giants have 3 LHPs in their pen (something you're not normally going to run up against) including their uber-LOOGY side-winding specialist Javier Lopez, and part is Bay being away both early in the season plus last night (damn them for allowing players to have sex!!), but the lack of RH punch off the bench is simply killing us.The likes of Emaus, Turner, Hairston, Hu & Nickeas have turned in a combined line (starting & not) of .182/.263/.256 in 137 PAsAdd that to the fact that LHPs at least partly neutralize Thole, Davis, Duda, Harris, Pridie, and even Pagan and it means there's got to be at least the threat of an antidote on the bench that makes managers like Bochy NOT feel like he can flash four fingers four separate times last night and be confident he can get away with it.Problem is, I don't know that there's much of an internal solution.- Emaus was flipped for Turner with little tangible change. - Paulino for Nickeas should help and so should (hopefully) a full-time Bay in LF.- Middle infield backups are never going to be good hitters (backup IFers who can hit are called starting IFers) and the idea of landing someone like Hu was to give Tejada room to grow, but maybe there's no more time to waste on that front (RT = .279/.348/.413 at Buffalo)- The most ready candidates from Buffalo - Nieuwenhuis & Martinez - both swing from the left side and the righty boppers in the org are still several years away so there doesn't seem to be an obvious replacement for Hairston or say a RH version of Duda.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 Nick Evans, come on down. You're the next contestant on The Bat is Right!
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 I agree with what Gwreck said in the 05/03 IGT: Hu is useless if Reyes is going to play everyday (as he has and should). If someone gets hurt, then we should cross that bridge when we get to it and I'm sure Turner can play SS in a pinch.Give Evans a shot. At least he's got some pop.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 And he's stinking up the greater Lake Erie region of New York to the tune of .240 / .265 / .385 // .650.How about Lutz?

I doubt they'd mess with that for the time being. at least for a bench guy.I don't mind Turner, at least not yet, but we don't really need him AND Hu. let Turner take some SS reps so he's at least fresh for backup purposes. Evans can backup 1b/3b as well presumably. at least well enough for these purposes. Personally I suspect one of the bench guys will be getting swapped when Pagan is back. Saturday is another shot at trying out the whole 'starting OF' thing and the backups being bench guys.

A 780 OPS ain't great or nothing, but he's always been able to hit southpaws. I think he could help the team more than Willie Harris.

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 Anyhow, Evans is trending well, with seven hits in his last four games. Maybe he's just not a cold-weather guy. So, yeah, give him a ringie.
