One year ago today, Ike Davis was called up, and the Mets more or less shut down Jacobs 2.0.

Ike's two-year "season" since then.

The doubles are pretty nice. Pretty surprising to see the sheer volume of games he's gotten into. He's made ten errors, and gets to more than the average firstbaseman's share of ballage on defense.

His simliarities aren't exactly mind-blowing, but neither are they anonymous.

Similar Batters through 23
1. Travis Lee (983)
2. Bill White (971)
3. Brad Fullmer (969)
4. Phil Todt (966)
5. Babe Dahlgren (965)
6. Jeff Bagwell (959)
7. Nate Colbert (958)
8. Phil Plantier (958)
9. John Mayberry (955)
10. Paul Konerko (953)

I'd take most of those careers. And I'd probably take the average career among them. There's a lot of big bad black guys in there --- White, Colbert, Mayberry --- but Travis Lee seems like a similar animal, a giant serious kinda handsome, kinda dorky white guy with a kinda black guy's name.

Because Bagwell's in there, I'll take the average among 'em.

Funny that there's nary a LaRoche in there, considering the nigh-endless comparisons. (I'd expect to see names like Leon Durham or Overbay or Segui in there within a year or two.)

Career WAR, as per bbr-com

1. Travis Lee: 4.6
2. Bill White: 33.1
3. Brad Fullmer: 5.0
4. Phil "Tater" Todt: -1.1
5. Babe Dahlgren: 2.6
6. Jeff Bagwell: 79.9
7. Nate Colbert: 12.3
8. Phil Plantier: 1.9
9. John Mayberry: 22.8
10. Paul Konerko: 22.6

OK, maybe I don't take most of those careers, but rather four of them and maybe Colbert's. The mean is 18.3 WAR, but the median is 8.65.

Other things going on at the time.

Mets were 5-8.
Pagan was starting to edge out Gary Matthews and getting more time.
Francoeur had some awesome numbers to that point.
Jose Reyes had failed as a number three hitter, going 6-40 through that date. IN the number one hole the next day, he would go 4-5.
R.A. Dickey was 11 days short of the near-perfect game that would save what was left of his career.

I don't want to say it's early, because there's just been so much terrible play, but a lot was left to happen to the Mets at this point last year, including a mad but brief charge into first. So keep watching. Change never stops. And excitement never stops. And hope never dies. See you at Shea!
