I never heard this song until this morning, then my brain exploded.

Whipped up a shitty video to share it.

Red Schoendeist with an early appearance of a name on the back of the jersey. Were the Cards the first in that regard?

That's some good work there. Sounds like Ricky's boys at the Tropicana.

The ChiSox were the first team to put player's name on the back of the jersey. Cool video. Never heard that song before.

All of it is awesome. Kinda wonder why Lukas wants to vanilla that song down to an all-purpose MLB thing, though?

Paul Lukas wrote:
We Want a Hit (which is what Ill be calling it from now on)

Eff that. It's called 'New York Mets'.

Yeah, I think it's more Metly than anything. The thing about those calypso records was that they often disguised a ribald or mean lyric behind a very innocent delivery and joyful melody, that's what's happening here and it matches the Mets in a lot of ways.

Quit preaching to the choir. Write it in the blog comments.

This is what I've got for a lyrics sheet. ** indicates lack of confidence by the transcirber.

If you want to hear how people scream
Go and see the latest baseball team
When you want to hear how people scream
Go see New York latest baseball team

Such loyalty, sincerity
Hard to believe
Although they last, not one of them have no regrets
They believe* in the New York Mets

They're cheerin:
"We want a hit!" (thump!)
"We want a hit!"
From the crack of the bat, there's noise in the place
'Specially if a Met can get on first base

Casey Stengel is the manager
A diehard who'll never surrender
Directing his team from the dugout
He really know what it is all about

You're gon' to see the strategy
Trying to score
And if it works, they scream like the old boy
He managed the best team we ever had.

They're cheerin:
"We want a hit!" (thump!)
"We want a hit!"
From the crack of the bat, there's noise in the place
'Specially if a Met can get on first base

Women, if you're homes are just the same
On TV, they watchin' at the game
Some **folk** get they're pot on the fire
Disagreeing with the umpire

'Cuz when hungry, the food is late
He have to wait!
And if the Mets come up with a **li'l'** double play
**?????** for her hubby that day

She cheerin:
"We want a hit!" (thump!)
"We want a hit!"
From the crack of the bat, there's noise in the place
'Specially if a Met can get on first base

Now the Mets are rather amazin'
You don't know what you'll be expectin'
Oh, KC, the clever manager
Makin' a change for a pinch hitter

They walk one man, they walk two men
And then, and then!
This is the case, they load up the base
And fire **catch in de place**

And they're cheerin:
"We want a hit!" (thump!)
"We want a hit!"
From the crack of the bat, there's noise in the place
'Specially if a Met can get on first base

* Note how the clarion call to "believe" predated Tug McGraw's invocation.

Great stuff! Congrats on getting this gem the visibility it deserves.

I thought I knew all the Mets songs, and never heard of this one. Great find!

Is it possible the baseball gods heard this plea long ago and misinterpreted it as a beseechment for at least one hit given up every time a Met takes the mound?
