Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 Royals blogger, counting down his team's top 100, looks back at Jeff Torborg's favorite futility infielder.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 "Wait until you see Bill Pecota!"That's got to be high on the list of famous/infamous Mets quotes.Maybe that can be next off-season's forum project: compiling and ranking famous Mets quotes.
Guest The Second Spitter Guests Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 Nate Silver was/is a Mets fan; If he developed his stat system a decade later it probably would have been called the VELANDIA.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 My favorite double-quote:Wally Backman: "From the stuff I heard from the trainers room, Straw shouldve been out there. Nobody in the world that I know of gets sick 25 times a year."Darryl Strawberry: I'll bust that little redneck in the face."I try to imagine being the reporter running back and forth between them. Do you file or do you go back for one more quote, seeing if the other guy will escalate?

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 Met figures in the top 100 Royals:#89: Paul Byrd#77: Fran Healy#66: Bil Pecota
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 No Bret Saberhagen???
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 #29: Cookie Rojas#94: Kevin McReynolds#42: Jose Offerman#58 Emil Brown and #57 Raul Gonzalez (really?)Don't think they've reached the top ten (and Saberhagen) yet.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 Royals blogger, counting down his team's top 100, looks back at Jeff Torborg's favorite futility infielder.First comment to the blog piece on Pecota: He's one of my favorite "gritty, hustles" type player. Nothing fancy just gives it all that he's got everytime on the field. ... although maybe we shouldn't knock it seeing as how the CPF #66 guy is Ron Hunt.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 So, Mets still to come would have to include Saberhagen and Amos Otis and Carlos Beltran.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 Oh! And Clint Hurdle and David Cone.

Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 Coney won a Cy for them-- he and Bagwell both got kneecapped in '94-- and posted a net 144 ERA+ for 2+ years, and his reward is a figurative place in Emil Brown's and Raul Gonzalez's neighborhood. That's some messed-up value system, there.

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 Jay Bell going wire to wire for the 2003 Mets, yet remaining unranked, has to go down as one of the top accomplishments in futility in Mets history.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 In 116 ABs, Jay managed to hit 20 singles and 1 double. Good lord, I had forgotten how bad that was.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 Didn't Jerry Grote have something like a 9-rbi day with the Royals? And he played very few games with them.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 When I think about the 1992 Mets, I often confuse/conflate Bill Pecota and Dave Gallagher. When I think of the 1993 Mets, I often conflate/confuse Dave Gallagher and Joe Orsulak. But I never associate Joe Orsulak with Bill Pecota.
