So... Niese shows signs of heat exhaustion and has heartbeat irregularities, so they take him out of the game almost immediately. (I'd quibble with that "almost," but still... nothing supergross about Mets management's conduct, probably.)

And it's okay, no big thing... because he's getting examined three days later, after doing his normal running yesterday, without anyone monitoring him. Wait, WHAT?

Hate to say it, but I'm with Rubin on this.

You can botch treatment for obliques and ankles, but why take any chances with a heart issue? Wasn't a change in the front office supposed to inject some common sense into the equation? The likelihood is Niese has nothing severe. Saturday's rapid heartbeat may even have been induced by the mid-90s heat. But Niese said he had experienced the issue before on the mound, even in cooler climates. Is it really sane -- even if there is an infinitesimally small chance of it being more severe -- to have Niese wait three full days for an exhaustive exam?

Misdiagnosing fractures is frustrating, but not taking precautions with a (recurrent?) HEART issue is borderline criminal.

Do you then break a guy out of his routine for the sake of some tests? If he then bombed his next start as a result of not running or throwing a side session or whatever?

It seems worse because it's the first we are hearing of this, but it's not the first the Mets are hearing of it.

I'm not a doctor, and i'm not going to pretend to play one. I'm certainly not going to suggest the Mets should always go the conservative route because of previous PR disasters, some warranted, some not. They sent him to one doctor. they talked to him, they talked to trainers. They discussed it (and I believe some beat writers got all in a fit when the Mets wouldn't immediately release information, instead waiting to get together on it..) and proceeded with everyone on the same page. I'm not sure I can really ask for more than that.

By the way, whenever my kids now say anything that makes me roll my eyes like a pair of dice coming up box cars, i just call their comment "Ceetarded". They don't get it, but they laugh. I just sigh.
