Zachary Craig Lutz

Pos: 3B, 1B; BR-TR

Born: June 3, 1986 (25 in 2011) in Reading, Pennsylvania, on a day the Mets' 13-hit attack wasn't enough to stop the Padres. (Claims not to be a Phillies phan.)

Wife: Unknown.

Nickname: "Lutzy." (Ugh. I'm calling him Yogi Jr. or Dale or something.)

Namesakes: This guy, an apparent competitor on the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Circuit.

[crossout]Best Day in 2010: Hu did next to nothing in 2010 at the big league level. Indeed, he had little opportunity to. But he did manage to double, score, and collect an RBI that certainly proved
a difference-maker in a September 29 victory over Colorado.[/crossout]
Last Word: Fully aware that the Mets have a guy at third, Zach just hopes to make it to the bigs this season and get a chance to contribute. He's swell.

What do you expect of Zach Lutz in 2011?

This part really confused me, now I realize it was a cut-and-paste error.

Lutz: Prolly won't come north to start the year, but could be better than Evans.

A solid year in AAA. We'll probably see him in September, although I suppose he could be a trade candidate if the Mets are contending in July.

Rakes in AAA. Gains nickname "Double" with his gap power. Hot-shit trading prospect. Sticks around for all right September callup.

We need to coalesce around something. I was kind of thinking of "Zack the Crack" or "The Omega Man."

Give him (and everyone in the minor league system with a pulse) a second baseman's mitt.

My adoptee is a healthy 220 pounds.
He looks more like a strong safety than a second baseman.

My 2011 expectations for him - pounding the shit out of the ball in Buffalo.
Long term, power hitter in the majors for a long time. I'm not sure for which club. The only thing that makes him stand out among almost all of the hitting prospects in the organization is that he is a right handed hitter.

As for nickname, I thought of adopting him when watching the ice skating during the Winter Olympics. So, to me, he will be Triple Lutz.

He's 6'5"/220 now, and would probably get even odds in a footrace with Duda and a riding mower.

"Triple" does NOT work as a nick.

As I pointed out above, "Double," maybe. "Omega Man" I like, but I think it's way too subtle for wide acceptance (unless he does something stunningly obvious, like hit a violent HR off a watch ad in another stadium). Something like "Lug" could work.

Well, he has to hit a quintuple to live up to that baby.

It may be ambitious, but I suspect he's destined to hit more quadruples than triples.

hits well, but not incredibly in buffalo. is a common name in rumors in coupling with beltran/reyes for better prospects, but ends up staying.
september callup, playing a little 1b and RF, showing some power, and decent hitting all around to make him a bigger possibility to trade during the offseason for a MI.

An inauspicious, mostly forgettable September debut. Off the field, Lutz is the sympathetic central figure in a minor scandal when $200 worth of Lutz's lottery tickets for that week's $400 million jackpot mysteriously disappear from his locker. The security tapes, leaked to the NY Post by Mets security, show that Fred Wilpon, the tabloids' only suspect (Locker Shocker! Lutz Looted! Wilpon Deluded! Who Dood It? Naked City: Hu is Hung! No-Hand No-Han: Santana to undergo season ending hand surgery!) was the last person in the locker room just before Lutz's lottery tickets went missing, The security tapes are otherwise inconclusive.

To deflect any further suspicion, Wilpon offers a $10,000.00 reward to the person with information leading to the return of Lutz's missing tickets. The scandal quietly fades away after the lottery commission confirms that there were no winners for that week's drawing, One week later, Fred Wilpon discovers the missing tickets stuck to the top of Lutz's locker and claims the reward money from partner Saul Katz.

This was my favorite episode of "Three's Company" ever.
