I hope that Hu becomes a Hall of Famer but until then, I still don't like seeing anybody but Keith wearing #17.

I say it's about time we reissued no. 8. I wonder if Charlie's departure will free that one up.

If I owned the Mets, you two would each get your wish. If I owned the Mets, I'd ensure that no Met ever wore #17 again.

I bet Emaus gets a lower number if he makes the team.

Implicit message to him and Beato: Just because we may lose you if you don't make the cut doesn't mean you've accomplished anything yet.

WILSON 53 just looks stupid. Stop being a dick, Luis.

New reason to disdain Luis Castillo's presence? Consider me on board!

Let's use honey instead of vinegar, floodiing the internet with essays of how handsome Luis would look in 11.

Would you believe he's already switched to 25?

Because he needs the ghost of Matsui following him around.

Won't Kaz Matsui be offended?

Now, conspiracy theory time..did Keith call up the Mets and bitch about this? Did someone else? Did they mistakenly give out 17 because the guys giving out the numbers might not be as well versed in Mets lore yet? They've had no qualms giving it to chum like Tatis, so why take it away unless... they're taking it away....forever?

All will be revealed in the fullness of blog.

I would vote "no" on retiring Keith's number, but of all the non-retired numbers, 17 is easily the most deserving. I'd start issuing number 8 to every journeyman who comes along. No way should Gary's number be retired. Sure, he's in the Hall, but he had one great year and one pretty good one as a Met, and three years of decline.

Yeah, I'm sure the new guy doesn't wanna make enemies among the Twittering defenders of fandom, whose practiced outrage was already kicking in. Plus I think that Keith's regard as a figure in Met history is only growing with his introduction to a new generation through TV, Seinfeld appearances, etc.

I am still not in favor of retiting 17 because it'd open up such a pandora's box, but perhaps they are getting the message to be gentle with it.

What about instead of just retiring 17, they wait a bit ,and retire it but make the 1 a microphone? (And hey, give the 7 a mustache while we're at it. Nothing wrong with being quirky.) After all, he's still contributing to the team.

And there were times the last couple of years where I thought he might've helped Mets hitters more than HoJo..

I always referred to those times as "waking hours."

It's the middle of winter and it's snowing. shadow, even dropshadow, requires sunlight.

huh?

In any case, the Mets really need to make an Abbott and Castillo style shirt if this guy makes the team.

Hu at the plate, with the scoreboard flashing WALK behind him and captioned "Hu's on First" maybe?

Both incredibly cool in its minimalism and pretty shoddy craftsmanship if it was intended as a commemorative jersey for Jets legend Mickey Shuler. Four letters fell off!

It was probably crafted in Taiwan.
