Mets -- doing their best to come off at their worst...again. I guess Sandy isn't in charge of the marketing yet.

Survey linked to from a Post story that was linked to by Mets Police.

Just to be clear, the first couple of pages are pretty standard. It's when they ask you to describe the Mets...oy.

"If the Mets logo were to appear on your favorite brand of bread, how would it affect your purchase? "

If it's my favorite brand of bread, I'm gonna buy it whether or not there's a Mets logo on it.

"If you were a brand of bread, would kind of bread would you be?"

If there were an MFY logo on my favorite brand of bread, I'd get a new favorite brand.

If the implication is "will you buy anything we slap the Mets logo on, no matter how stale?" well no on the bread, but I did buy into Gary Matthews, Jr. for a few weeks last April.

To the statement about ownership caring about its fans, I answered Strongly Disagree.

It was actually cathartic answering this thing.

I can picture Fred , Saul and Jeff pouring over spread sheets with the poll results....sleeves rolled up, top shirt button open, pacing around the conference table looking concerned.

"Dammit Fred, is it too late to hire Wally,it's a different result with him"

See, now I Strongly Disagree with that! This survey provides more evidence that the Mets still probably care WAY too much about what their fans think.

And with regards to the customer-care stuff, I think they are making a good effort with hospitality and service. Yes they are trying to steal from us, but I expect that.

You know what? Every team is trying to steal from its fans, but in my experience most of them at least give the appearance of actually appreciating them.

Every time I deal with the Phillies (hate the team, but dammit if the organization hasn't always treated me really well) it drives home that point to me.

If nothing else, answering the question negatively lets the organization know that they need to be much more proactive if they want to satisfy the fans.

Well the question can be read different ways: caring about fans can mean

  • caring about their general welfare,
  • caring about their welfare once they are inside the park,
  • caring about the quality of their fan experience, beyond their welfare, or
  • caring about their thoughts and ideas.

Among other things.

There were two different questions right? One was about the front office, one specifically referred to tthe owners. I think it was sorta ballsy of the Mets to include the question about the owners, knowing what the response will likely be.

I wonder how much the consultant who sold them on the brilliance of the bread question as "incredibly revealing" got paid.

Q: What does being a Mets fan mean to you?
A: My Mets fandom is an act of existential heroism, with no reward beyond the act itself.

From my what-it-means:

"It means having a serious conversation or two with my wife about whether it makes more sense to raise our unborn child 'outside the faith,' because the return on our temporal-financial-emotional investment has diminished so much over the last half-decade or so, and because the world's full of enough heartbreak and better, more rewarding things for her to marry and love.

It means we fall back on instinct and buy her a tiny Jose Reyes jersey anyway, because we're dumbly loyal to colors and chanting his name is fun."

Really, these surveys get a lot worse than the bread question.

Did you write that or what? Because that question was a goldmine of an opportunity.

That's part of it-- the part I remember. It was longer-- with more about how fun and weird tradition can be, and selling out that tradition when you pitch nothing but alternate-color, cartoon present-tense-- and I forgot to select and copy before clicking "Next."

Then again, again, they could be asking us whether the team is more "Old New York" or "New New York" or "Queens of the Future." (Seriously, check out the Deadspin link. Ranger fans got something really awful.)
