Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 I didn't see bench thread, but Tracksuit is tweeting that the Mets are sniffing around Reed Johnson, who apart from having a superhero secret identity name, is no Fred Lewis. He really seems like an Omar-era bench player --- in fact a righthanded version of Jeremy Reed, with the good outfield defense and crap OBP, And from the right side, he'd be less useful offensively.
A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 Gimme Lou Collier, damn it.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 Johnson is really coming off a bad season. He did have some back problems, but he's at an age where you can't be too optimistic about him bouncing back. For a minor-league deal he's still worth a look, but I wouldn't go above that.
Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 The bench looks like this, so far:1) Ronny Paulino © - Rh2) Nick Evans (corner If/Of) - Rh3) Daniel Murphy + Mick Emaus (2b platoon -- assuming Castillo is released/traded)4) Luis Hernandez (SS/UT) - Swh5) Lucas Duda -or- Jason Pridie -or- Fred Lewis* (of) - Lh* on edit
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 Paulino's not eliegible for opening day because he has to complete his suspension, so I guess that's good news for Mike Nickeas.Mets who started their New York career under suspension:[list:22iv2vk8][*:22iv2vk8]Ronny Paulino[/*:m:22iv2vk8][*:22iv2vk8]Jerry Martin[/*:m:22iv2vk8][*:22iv2vk8]Anybody else?[/*:m:22iv2vk8][/list:u:22iv2vk8]

First, we're flirting, then we're really flirting, then... nothing.

I suppose the assumption is that he'll be called up at some point this season, but by forcing an extra catcher for the first eight games, you're potentially wasting an option year on someone.

Leaving aside the lack of names, this has the makings of being a really intriguing, skilled bench. Paulino KILLS lefties, and Duda did the same to righties in the minors and showed flashes of plus-power in the waning days of last year. Emaus/Murph/Hernandez make for an interesting, deep MI miasma. Toss, say, a Fred Lewis in there-- someone who can handle backup work, is a decent enough glove to come in as a defensive "closer," and gets on base some with the bat-- and we've got a stew going.Turner plays-- or "plays"-- short, too, no?

bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 Boy did I misread the thread title. I thought that it was referring to benchers, which is a small Hebrew prayer book:http://www.anybencher.com/benchers.asp?subcat=HebrewThis is about bench players! Now I get it!

HahnSolo Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 Clearly I missed something over the last few days. I am sure I'm missing a joke, but "Mick Emaus" cannot possibly be a real name. Can it?
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 No, but Brad Emaus, 25yo Rule V claimee is.

Theoldmole Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 I hate the idea of 12 pitchers.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 So do I. But unless 2-3 of the 11 are swingmen (or potential swingmen), it may be prudent, considering what the rotation will look like, before and after Santana returns. All else being equal, though, I'd much rather have a Fred Lewis than a Jorge Sosa.
