Didn't see that one coming. Don't know where they're getting all these spots on the 40 man roster.

Absolutely saw it coming. He's the best current candidate to back up Josh Thole next year, and a celebration of the value they're still getting out of Victor Diaz, who himself traces back to Jeromy Burnitz, who leads us to Lenny Harris to Bill Pulsipher to Luis Lopez to Tim Bogar.

That's right. Your New York Mets. Still getting value out of the 1987 draft. Oh, yeah!

Nickeas has a perfectly good chance to build hiself a Vance Wilson career at this point.

No, I was surprised because they didn't mention it on the Bisons post game show last night, like they had announced when Duda and Mejia were to be called up. And they still have a few more games to play, with a slim chance at the playoffs. If he were to be called up, I'd thought they would wait intil their season is over.

Here's his record:

I adopted this guy once upon a time. He's had some hopeful years and some discouraging ones with the bat, but the glove has kept him employed.

Ten Things You Might or Might Not Know About Mike Nickeas

  1. Hit ten homers in 62 games of rookie ball in 2004 and hasn't sniffed that number since.

  2. As mentioned in another thread, is the son of EPFL/NASL/MISL/WSA soccer player Mark Nickeas.

  3. Has played for international teams as an American (his mother's nationality) and as a Brit (his father's nationality), but is himself a native of Canada. Conclusion? Mike is a mercenary, loyal to no flag save the flag of filthy mammon.

  4. He played his college ball for Georgia Tech. Majored in management. The only other Met to claim Yellow Jacket status? Darren Bragg, baby.

  5. Named the best defensive catcher in the Rangers' system by Baseball America as long ago as 2005.

  6. When he's got his spring training tan on, he occasionally displays a small spot near the left side of his mouth that seems to be lacking in pigment.

This puts me in mind of his glove-first predecessor Jerry Grote, who had a little pink spot on the other side of his mouth.

  7. In 2007, GothamBaseball.com named him as the 10th-best Mets prospect. They did. No, I'm serious.

  8. Apparently, was very helpful to Josh Thole with the catching skillz. This callup may in part be a thank you.

  9. Caught Jenrry Mejia in the Eastern League in 2009 (when Mejia wasn't very good) and 2010 (when he was), and note that his poise was complegely different. Maybe he gets the starting job for Mejia's first big league start.

  10. In Bingo, he cut down Eastern Leeague baserunners like he was a knife and they were all Bryan Adams. http://www.wicz.com/news/video-POTW.asp?video=08%2D24%2D10+jc%2Ewmv%2Eflv&zone=Sports

(Note from that video that the correct pronunciation is apparently NIK-ee-us, rather than ni-KAY-us.)

After seeing the photos of Ross on the mound last year, I'll add both of them to the roster!

Caught Jennry Mejia last month in Trenton as well.

I figure that, since August, the Mini Knight has pitched only two fewer innings for the Mets than Oliver Perez.

And he could likely find the plate more easily than Ollie....

Maine to the 60day DL. I think Tatis can be moved there for a spot too, not sure they did that yet. But I can't be bothered to check.

Not sure how I forgot him. Would you believe I was just testing you?

Tatis is already on the 60-Day.

A nice thought.

But I can't be the only one rooting for a Hank White repeat performance next year, can I? The man is a defensive weapon, has a smashing mullet, and looks like a youth counselor who used to be a street gang enforcer.

Of course. I just meant to imply there that Nickeas was the best candidate currently under contract. He was probably a Rule Five candidate if the Mets hadn't added him to the roster.

Man , he has that square jaw working....I predict plenty of wet knickers at Citi Field when he shows up there.

Mike Nickeas finally reaches the major leagues as September call-up catcher for New York Mets
BY Andy Martino
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Friday, September 3rd 2010, 4:00 AM

ATLANTA - Mike Nickeas nearly retired last summer, after wrist surgery and six years in the minors. He forged onward, though, and made it to the major leagues Thursday.

"You're getting older, you haven't been on a 40-man (roster), you haven't come up," the 27-year-old catcher said, after the Mets made him a September call-up. "That thought comes through a lot of guys' minds as they are struggling through the minor leagues. You want to feel that you're tough enough to keep doing it, doing it. Fortunately enough, especially today, it's kind of all coming together and I'm really thankful that I decided to stay with it."

A career .231 hitter in the minor leagues known for excellent defense, Nickeas was originally drafted by the Texas Rangers in 2004, and acquired by the Mets for outfielder Victor Diaz in 2006. His career did not seem promising last season, so he considered looking for coaching jobs instead.

We need to hand out Player of the Thread points for that one.

The obvious winner is Vic Sage, but points have to be awarded to FK. It was one line, but a doozy.

Vic is the starting pitcher that went seven innings giving up 2 runs, but FK had the pinch hit solo shot in the 8th that put the team ahead.

On Edit:

Vic Sage - 4.5
Dickshot - 1.5
Soupcan - 1
Frayed Knot 1
Edgy 1
KC .5
ABNS .5

I want to like Curly and might very well end up with her, but she scares me for now: She's kinda artificial.

Blondie's looking pretty sweet but you know she'll be the top target of all of the groom's teammates, and she'll invariably choose the dumbest and jockiest of them all.

Seo's argument has me considering Squinty, even if I disagree with the remark about the naturalness of her smile, but my strategy there is going to be strictly indirect -- shooting her funny looks behind Seo's back while I take a more direct approach with Pearly. She's got the best curves of any of them.

Blacky is the groom's sister, obviously, and so doesn't get close to the high-school clique.

i will take curly, she likes to ride bikes on the weekends. blacky likes me, but we will soon learn we have nothing in common. i like pearly, but i'm her blacky. curly and i will work out just fine.

If this were a direct to video erotic thriller, then Blackie would be the scantily-clad psycho who slips into the groom's bed later that night while she has the bride tied up in the trunk of her car.

Not that I watch erotic thrillers or anything.
