metirish Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 Fred WIlpon answering a question about Omar returning after the season. 51 m ago By Kimberley A. MartinSTORRS, Conn. -- Mets owner Fred Wilpon was at the University of Connecticut today for a press conference involving SNY. The press conference was to announce a programming partnership with the school similar to the one it has with Rutgers.Wilpon wasn't very talkative about the Mets, who are sitting at .500 with a weekend series coming against the Phillies in Philadelphia. But he did make a few brief comments.Wilpon said today wasn't the day to talk about the Mets, instead preferring to focus on the SNY announcement. He said Omar Minaya is really the guy to talk to regarding the Mets. When asked if Minaya would be the GM after this season, he said "will the sun rise tomorrow?"When asked what kind of job he thought Mets COO Jeff Wilpon -- Fred's son -- was doing, he said "excellent."http://www.newsday.com/sports/baseball/mets/on-the-mets-beat-1.812057/fred-wilpon-gives-omar-minaya-vote-of-confidence-1.2179857

bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 Paying someone too much money for too many years is the Wilpon M.O. Omar is the Castillo of GM's.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 So what he's saying is, he's half-expecting an astrological calamity, right?

Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 Fred's not giving orders anymore. Besides, do you think the time or place to announce Omar's "promotion" to Senior Vice President of You Know What I'm Sayin', Uh, Scouting and Development and Maturity is at a SNY event in Connecticut.Don't vomit and smash your heads needlessly.

seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 Eff UConn and Rutgers, SNY. You have a D-I program with SIX conference championships last year right here on Long Island, you know.

Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 New York has basically everything a person could want and basically any sport you could ever want to see...except good college football.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2010 Posted August 6, 2010 Well, it's Friday morning, and I just verified that the sun did indeed arise.Any comment from Fred regarding this?
soupcan Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2010 Posted August 6, 2010 When Fred said 'will the sun rise tomorrow?' could he possibly have meant, 'relax, yes I know the team looks dreadful right now, but its not the end of the world and we can deal with the personnel issues in due time.'?Because I can't find any other quote where he defiitively states that Omar will be back and the above quote is a bit ambiguous. That being said - Omar is in the first year of a three year extension.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted August 6, 2010 Posted August 6, 2010 It's a real mess over here folks. I'm banging my head in my puke.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted August 6, 2010 Posted August 6, 2010 Are you sure you're not in Philly this morning, Edgeward?
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2010 Posted August 6, 2010 soupcan wrote:That being said - Omar is in the first year of a three year extension.Second year. He signed the extension December 08. There are club options for 2013 and 2014.Plus, he makes like $1.2 million a year. Firing him isn't the same as eating Oliver Perez money.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted August 6, 2010 Posted August 6, 2010 Naw. It's more like eating Alex Cora money.Crap.
