Gayrod just tied the MFYs-Bosox game with a 9th inning 2rHR off Papelbum. Sawx were down 5-0 in the first but hit 5 HRs to have taken a 9-7 lead. Now 9-9.

Holy shit, walkoff by Marcus Thames.

Every MFY batter hit the living shit out of the ball this inning, except for Cervelli who was HBP.

Normally I'd greet an MFY walkoff over their archrivals with the excitement I usually reserve for lima beans or Lima Time, but I still associate Papelbon with his denial histrionics from last May's Omir replay game, so despite my better instincts, eff him.

Yeah, same here.

Hamley Ramirez got his ass benched during last night's loss - either for loafing or being hurt (or disguising one as the other).
Basically he was going out for an over the shoulder pop-up catch but couldn't reach it. OK, no problem yet, but in missing it he accidently kicked it past the incoming LFer and towards the LF corner. He then proceeded to chase it down at a rate somewhat slower than Bengie Molina's HR trot.
Earlier he had fouled a ball off his ankle and was hobbling somewhat - but he also talked them into letting him stay in the game and looked OK running after the pop-up right up until he kicked the ball.

That (Devil) Rays walkoff bunt was just insult added to injury for the Indians, as Asdrubal Cabrera and Jhonny Peralta had a violent collision in the first inning. Aside from the obvious (there were consonants everywhere!), Cabrera ended up with a broken forearm.

Indians fans had been enduring a crap season, but their team was just starting to hit, and now they've lost their leadoff hitter.

I heard the Yankee walk-off homer while driving home last night. Jon Sterling was caught so unprepared, he didn't even have a "signature call" for Marcus Thames.

Fredi Gonzalez confirmed in interview it was for not hustling.

Y'know that giving away the game thing the Mets were trying to do tonight?

The first-place(!) Reds turned the trick in Atlanta this afternoon, farting away a 9-1 fifth-inning lead... on seven runs in the ninth inning... capped by a walk-off, pinch-hit Brooks Conrad grand slam off Francisco Cordero.

Tampa took the second of two from the MFYs to run up their division lead another couple of games. They're looking scary-good this year. We're 1/4 of the way through the season and they're on pace for 118 wins.

Bottom 9th in Atlanta against Cincy - down 9-3

Mike Lincoln pitching:
- Glaus singles
- Hinske singles
- Escobar singles
- McLouth singles (2 runs score)
Nick Masset pitching
- Ross walks (bases loaded)
- Prado reaches on error (Cairo) (1 run scores)
Arthur Rhodes pitching
- Heyward strikes out
Francisco Cordero pitching
- Conrad hits GS (4 runs score)

The GS went off the top of the fence AND the fielder's glove. Conrad thought it was caught and started to throw his helmet before he heard the stadium erupting.

Arthur Rhodes

If you had told me he retired 3 years ago, I'd have believed you.

Enjoyed watching the Red Sox put a beat down on the Phillies and Roy Halladay at Citizens Bank Park. The Red Sox did a nice job of jumping on first pitch fastballs from Halladay. Throw in some shoddy defense by the Phillies and the rout was on. Making all the more enjoyable was watching Tim Wakefield baffle the Phillies with his knuckler. Wakefield had a 5 hit shutout through eight complete, but Francona opted to go to his pen with an 8 run lead rather than let Wakefield go for the complete game shutout. The Phillies too little, too late ninth inning effort did nothing to dampen my spirits.

Amazingly, a Mets win today would still leave them in last place, but only 5 games behind the Phillies.

I wonder if it's a good idea to start Dickey in this next series, considering they just saw a knuckleballer. Hmm.

Knuckleballs are like tiny snowflakes.
Each is different.

Wakefield's knuckler ranged between 60-67 mph. Generally, 65 or 66 mph. His fastball was in the mid 75-78 mph range. The Phillies were getting pretty good swings on him, they just didn't hit the ball solidly very often. A lot of weak fly balls throughout the game.
